LIFE+ NATURA LEOPOLDIA LIFE11 NAT/IT/000232 - Ripristino degli habitat dunali nel paesaggio serricolo del golfo di Gela per la salvaguardia di Leopoldia gussonei COMUNICATO STAMPA Catania 5 febbraio 2015 CONFERENCE: RURAL AREAS AS LANDSCAPE VALUE 26-27 March 2015, Catania, Italy Life Leopoldia (LIFE11 NAT/IT/000232), in collaboration with AIIA (Italian Association of Agricultural Engineering), host in Catania, Sicily, on 26 and 27 March 2015 a conference entitled “Rural areas as landscape value”, to discuss on rural land quality for supporting the development of local communities . LIFE Leopoldia aims to re-establish and protect the sand dune habitats in the greenhouse landscape of the Gela gulf, in the southern coast of Sicily, for the safeguarding of Leopoldia gussonei, severely endangered by the extremely high agricultural pressure. This conference will be an opportunity to exchange best practices and reflect on conservation, redevelopment and enhancement of rural areas as landscape value, biodiversity reserve, driving force of local economies and source of identity for the local population as understood by the European Landscape Convention. LIFE Leopoldia proposes the landscape planning as a tool to review the past and present activities, emphasize the interactions between natural and human systems and structures to support future for the region compatible with the needs of nature conservation, establishing boundaries between use and abuse of the land. The field trip to the gulf of Gela will show the LIFE Leopoldia project actions to decrease human pressure on dune habitas and increase low- impact agricultural management systems.
