Basic Optimal Health Principles 1. Feeding and nourishing your body’s systems 2. Cleansing and removing toxins from your body Connecting The Body Systems 1. Colon 2. Small Intestines 3. Liver 4. Lymphatic System 5. Circulatory System The Digestive System • Where the nutrients & many toxins are absorbed in our bodies • Learn how the Digestive System works Step One Feeding and Nourishing the Body Systems Digestion We chew the food, digestion starts in the mouth. As we chew the food, the body produces enzymes to assist in the digestion process. Step Two Digestion Food moves down into the stomach, where further digestion occurs. • The stomach is the only acidic organ in the body • The stomach breaks the food down & turns it into an isotonic liquid-state called CHYME Step Three Digestion This chyme moves down into the small intestine, for further digestion and absorption. • The small intestine is about 21 ft. long & 1.5 inches in diameter • The small intestine is where most of the nutrient absorption takes place Absorption • Inside the small intestine are thousands of finger-like structures called VILLI, that increase the surface area for nutrient absorption. This extended surface area add up to about 200 square meters (about the surface area of a tennis court). Folds In Small Intestine Villi Inner lining, where absorption occurs Outer layer Absorption Distribution of Nutrients and Toxins Every thing that is absorbed through the VILLI (nutrients, medications, chemicals & toxins) enters the blood stream and lymphatics, and is then carried & distributed throughout the body. Step Four Digestion The unused food passes into the colon (large intestine). • The colon should eliminate the unused foods and toxins from our bodies 2 to 3 times each day, and reabsorb the water that is released in digestive juices. • Did you know? The large intestine is about 5 ft. long and 2.5 inches in diameter ? Our Digestive Tract is subjected to toxins. “AUTOINTOXICATION” The production of toxic chemicals produced by the colon bacteria, and the continuous diffusion of these toxins into the colon and ultimately the blood stream, may result in possible damage to the colon as well as distant sites in the body. THE COLON The Western diet is full of white flour, meat, milk, sugar and processed and “fast” foods. As a result, many people are exposed to waste build up in their colons contributing to “autointoxication”. How Our Body Handles Toxins Blood carries toxins to the liver... • The liver filters blood coming from the digestive tract. • Excessive years of toxic exposure may impair the function and efficiency of the liver. • If the liver becomes impaired, the toxin produced by “autointoxication” may also affect the lymphatic system. Lymphatic System Immune System Two Main Functions: 1. Protects us from infection (viruses, bacteria, fungi) and tumors 2. Cleans up waste products Lymphatic System Runs along side of the circulatory system. It has no pump: fluid is moved passively during muscle contraction. Lymphatic System • When functioning correctly, the lymphatic system will dump its waste products into the colon where it is excreted. • However, when the colon and liver are not working to full capacity, the lymphatic system may release wastes into the bloodstream where it may settle into organs and tissues. Circulatory System The transport system for your blood (heart, arteries, veins and capillaries). • Transport nutrients from intestinal absorption and carries oxygen from lungs to all cells and tissues of the body. • Brings wastes from all cells and tissues to the kidneys for excretion. Did You Know • All of your body systems must be functioning properly to achieve optimal health. • Compromise any of our body’s systems and we: • Don’t function properly • Don’t feel well • Compromise our capacity for optimal health What is Wrong with the Current Western Diet? • Wrong Foods - excessive fats, sugars, processed; NOT enough: fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, berries, nuts, plant proteins • Wrong Amounts - portions are often 3-4x the normal size • Wrong Time - eating large meals at dinner, just before sleep, skipping breakfasts, rushing lunch, etc. TYPICAL WESTERN DIET Foods / Ingredients and Their Effect on the Body Donut White Flour - When mixed with water makes paste. Donuts have little to no fiber and have large amounts of sugar. Sugars - Destroy B-Vitamins. B-Vitamins feed our nervous system and help keep us calm. Also, excess sugars can bind to proteins, cell membranes and even DNA significantly impairing function. Hydrogenated Oils -The food industry uses this process to prolong the shelf life of foods. This “industrial” fat or hydrogenated oil contributes to heart disease, inflammation and impairs cell function. Coffee Coffee provides excess caffeine, may destroy friendly bacteria, and is nutrient depleted. TYPICAL WESTERN DIET Foods / Ingredients and Their Effect on the Body Cheese Burger More white flour which makes paste. Processed cheese is made with hydrogenated oils and high in saturated fat and salt. Ground beef- high in saturated fat, may contain antibiotics and other chemicals. French Fries Potatoes fried in more hydrogenated oil, high in salt, low in nutrients. White potatoes rapidly raise blood sugar levels. Cola, Sodas Phosphoric acid in soda’s can leach out the calcium in our bodies. High in sugars, devoid of nutrients. TYPICAL WESTERN DIET Foods / Ingredients and Their Effect on the Body Canned Foods Ice Cream Cookies Pasteurized Milk Loaded with salt, may contain preservatives, less nutritious than fresh or frozen foods. Use canned foods mostly for emergencies (power failures, natural disasters, etc.). High in saturated fat, sugar. May contain many chemicals. Eat sparingly and in small amounts. More white flour, hydrogenated oil and sugar. Calcium from milk is not easily absorbed. Whole milk is high in saturated fat. Excess dairy products may promote inflammation. What To Avoid Or Limit • Limit animal protein, high in saturated fat • Limit refined carbohydrates, sodas, saturated and trans fats, etc. WHAT SHOULD WE CONSUME Eat Right FRESH FRUITS Fruit is high in fiber, natural sugars, water and loaded with antioxidants like vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Fiber. Devoid in many processed foods, drinks, etc. Important for good bowel function, absorption of toxins, maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, etc. Natural sugars. The immediate energy source. Water. We are 70% water and we need to continuously hydrate our bodies. Antioxidant/Bioflavonoids. Plant compounds that have many beneficial properties beyond antioxidation. Eat Right FRESH VEGETABLES High in antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Antioxidants and phytochemicals provide numerous health benefits not abundant in processed or fast foods. Dark green vegetables is a great source of calcium, vitamins and minerals. No fat, full of fiber. Cultures who consume large amounts of raw vegetables have healthy and long life spans. WHAT TO INCREASE... Fresh plant sources, high in fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals… WHAT TO INCREASE... Healthy fats, omega-3 fats in oily fish and nuts 2009 Food Pyramid mypyramid.gov HEALTHY EATING To Promote Nourishing and Cleansing our Body Systems • Choose healthy, unprocessed foods. At every meal eat a balance of: • Carbohydrates: complex, unrefined carbohydrates with high fiber content • Proteins: more plant proteins, less animal proteins • Fats: “healthy fats”, mono-unsaturated, omega-3 fatty acids • Consume smaller portions, pay attention to portion size. • Eat more frequently, 4-6 healthy snacks or meals per day, do not skip meals. • Consume daily plenty of fresh fruits, raw and steamed vegetables, whole grains, nuts and berries. Healthy Eating Tips • Do not eat when tired or emotionally upset. • Create a relaxed environment for eating. • Sit quietly, chew thoroughly. • Focus on enjoying your meal. • Do not drink with your meals—drink most of your liquids between meals. What is the Solution... 1. Feed and adequately nourish your body systems 2. Cleanse and remove toxins from the body Why We Need Nutritional Supplementation • Based on the National Health and Nutrition Education Survey (NHANES-joint collaboration of USDA and the Center for Disease Control), in 2002: • 93% Americans did not meet the Estimated Adequate Requirement (EAR*) for Vitamin E • 56% did not meet the EAR for magnesium • 44% did not meet the EAR for Vitamin A • 31% did not meet the EAR for Vitamin C *EAR- represents the target intake level which will meet the needs of 50% of the population. What is Optimal Health • To live life with robust vitality, peak level of functioning. • To enjoy physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health daily. • To live free of chronic, degenerative and age-related challenges. Nutritional Support for Everyone Foundations of Optimal Health Regimen • Multivitamins & Multiminerals • Omega-3 • OPC-3® (bioflavonoids) What Is Isotonic Nutritional Supplementation • “iso” = same and “tonic” = pressure or tone • Same fluid pressure as in tears, plasma, lymph and other body fluids • Isotonic nutritional supplementation comes in a powder form and when mixed with the appropriate amount of water becomes an isotonic formulation Isotonic Nutritional Supplementation • When a supplement is taken already in isotonic form and before meals: • The stomach does not have to digest it, secrete and churn stomach acids • The waiting time in the stomach, known as gastric emptying time is significantly reduced, delivering the nutrients to the site of absorption in minutes rather than hours • The nutrients are delivered in a higher concentration allowing for a more efficient absorption in the small intestine • All of these factors allow for more efficient and enhanced delivery of nutrients into the small intestine where most absorption takes place. In Addition To The Physiologic Advantages Of Isotonic Delivery • Isotonix® Supplements: • Do not require fillers or binders, since it comes in powder form to be mixed with a specified amount of water • Easy to swallow since it becomes a liquid formulation“drink your nutrients” • You can take several different isotonic supplements together, in one glass, first thing in the morning- as a “new breakfast juice” • Maximize delivery and availability of all the nutrients you consume, so none remain in the large intestine as undigested pills or tablets- often seen on an x-ray (in the case of calcium tablets) Who Would Benefit From Isotonic Nutritional Supplementation • Everyone and Especially… • Elderly people - who may hate or have difficulty swallowing numerous pills • When digestion is impaired or less efficient • Those with digestive challenges such as post operative gastric by-pass clients • Absorption challenges • Children- who would rather drink a berry/fruity solution rather than gulp down their vitamin pills Isotonic Multivitamins & Multi-Minerals • 100% of essential vitamins needed for proper nutritional balance • Isotonic delivery; efficient and complete absorption • Great tasting • Easy to take Omega III – Fish Oils • EPA • Healthy fish oil/fatty acid • Obtained by eating wild salmon (better than farm raised), mackerel, sardines and herring • DHA • Another healthy fish oil/fatty acid, • Primary structural Omega 3 found in the brain and retina • Obtain from a diet of fatty fish • The average American's daily intake of DHA is estimated to be 100 mg lower than it was about 50 years ago • Deficiency may lead to severe mood imbalance • An omega 3 supplement must provide adequate amounts of purified EPA & DHA.
