Tele Democracy
What is Tele Democracy?
• Tele democracy is applying the new
information and communication technology to
enhance the power of the people in the public
affairs and therefore promote democracy.
• This utilisation of appropriate technology will
modernise the political system and bring its
outdated nineteenth-century techniques to
the twenty-first century realities.
Citizens’ decisions are important..
• That is a form of government in which all adult
citizens are presumed to be eligible to
participate equally in the proposal,
development and the creation of laws.
• Tele democracy includes social, economic and
cultural conditions that give the possibility of a
free and equal practice of political selfdetermination.
• Taking advantage of this technology, political
systems can become more ‘democratic’, which
means that there could be more people involved
in collective decision-making.
• The communication technology can help
democracy by facilitating agreement-building
among its citizens.
Technology as a campaign tool
• The lower cost of information exchange on the
Internet makes the Internet an attractive medium for
political information, particularly amongst social
interest groups and parties with lower budgets.
• For e.g. environmental or social issue groups may
find the Internet an easier mechanism to increase
awareness of their issues, compared to traditional
media outlets, such as television or newspapers,
which require heavy financial investment.
