Executive Summary
General Information:
Star Group Co. is located in Guangzhou, China. Its mission is to “become the world’s premier rubber supplier.” Founded
in 1991, the company has grown to include 7 subsidiaries, 4 of which are manufacturing and 3 of which are trade
based. The company currently provides its services of custom molded rubber parts to 4 industries: Automotive (53%),
Home Appliance (22%), Industrial Machinery (13%), Other (12%). The company manufactures and sells such rubber
parts as: Oil Seals, O Rings ,Steering Column Parts, Wiring Parts, Brake Parts, Dampening, Fabrication Parts, Belts,
Hosing, Corrugate Piping, and other Custom Molded Parts. The bulk of its clientele base is located in China, with
additional clients located in Japan and the US.
Company Objectives:
The current goals and objectives of Star Group is to become the world’s premier rubber supplier, increase sales within
the US market, and attain sales of RMB350 Million this year (2013), and to obtain sales of RMB 5 Billion in 2020. Star
Group also aims to attain $20,000,000 USD in revenue from the US market by 2015.
Current Adverse Conditions:
Star Group is currently facing 3 primary issues. Star Group has a very small footprint in the US market. The company
has very few clients as well as a limited US marketing channel, no US sales offices, or American sales representatives,
though the company does utilize two manufacturing agents. Communication with potential US clients is very limited,
and the presentation material for English clients has subpar English, thus diminishing the company’s rapport. Also,
there is no team within sales that is specifically trained, nor qualified, to handle interactions with English speaking
clientele. Lastly, Star Group is not engaging in any activity to promote brand awareness in the US. Presently, Star
Group uses supplier portals as the only means of contacting US companies. Proactive direct selling is the only means
of obtaining US clients, which is both time consuming and limiting.
Remedies:
To combat the adverse conditions mentioned above, we have proposed these key tactics, as well as several others:

English Presentation Materials
Star Group’s only method of contacting
US companies is via supplier portal
registrations without utilizing other direct
marketing tactics (emails, direct mail,
cold calls…)
• There are few employees that can
speak English at a level to be able to
converse and negotiate with US clients
• Within the English presentation
materials, there are many errors and
phrases that do not make sense, thus
diminishing company’s image
Key Observations:
• The only English presentation materials Star Group has are
the English website, the company PPT, the company video,
and the company brochure. All of these items need revisions
• The company only contacts US companies through their
supplier portals
• If a US company showed up without a Chinese interpreter,
Star Group would struggle with communicating with the client

Website Problems
The English Website lacks information.
The image shown is from the product
page, which may be considered the most
important page on the website. Also,
there is still Chinese present, as can be
seen on the left side of the screen.
Situational Analysis
The hosting gets taken over by other
companies (mainly television shows).
This happens semi-regularly.
The website also looks outdated.

Situational Analysis
Minimal US Presence
•
Star Group only has 8 US clients
Star Group has no US sales
representatives that work directly for
Star Group; however, the company does
utilize 2 manufacturing agents within the
US to try to contract work
Star Group rents a warehouse in
Detroit, Michigan. This warehouse is its
only US entity
Key Observations:
• Star Group has a very small footprint in
the US market
• Star Group also has limited brand
recognition in the US market due to a
small client portfolio and lack of
advertising and direct sales
• The rented warehouse in Detroit,
Michigan is the only physical tie Star
Group has to the US

Key Issues
There is a very minimal footprint in the US Market:
As of now, Star Group only has a few clients in the US market and one warehouse located in
Detroit, Michigan. It does not have a large American clientele, sales offices, or American US
sales representatives (though Star Group does utilize two manufacturing agents).
Communication with American clients is poor:
•
Communication with US clients is limited. The presentation material designed for American
clients has subpar English, thus diminishing the company’s image and effectiveness. There is
no team dedicated solely to English clientele.
Brand Awareness in the US is low:
•
Key Issues
•
Star Group does not engage in any sort of advertising within the US market. The only means of
contacting US clientele is direct selling using supplier portals, which is both time consuming
and limiting.

Become “Multidomestic”
•
To become multidomestic means that the
customers in each foreign country believe that
Star Group is a company of their own nationality
and not a Chinese company
–
•
Purchase a US Rubber manufacturing company
that has a preexisting clientele (preferably in the
automotive field)
–
–
–
•
This is beneficial because US companies are
generally more willing to work with other US
companies
Focus on companies located in Michigan to
minimize shipping costs, as the Midwest has the
highest concentration of firms in industries with
rubber needs, as well as the majority of
automotive manufacturing
Recommended: StanPro: http://www.stanpro.com
Vedovell: http://www.vedovell.com
To see a list of 44 rubber seal manufacturing
plants in the Midwest, see appendix 34-47
•
•
Shut down the manufacturing plant of the
company (keep manufacturing in China to
keep a competitive advantage in labor wages),
liquidate all of the factory equipment, and
convert the factory space into a warehouse
When liquidating the machinery, consign the
machines to maximize profits

To gain a larger footprint in the US,
companies outside of the Fortune 500 list
need to be accessed
2nd tier companies will allow Star Group to
increase their US client portfolio, which will
make Star Group a more credible company
for a Fortune 500 company to work with
Having 2nd tier companies as clients will
increase brand awareness and Star
Group’s reputation
The volume of 2nd tier companies is high,
which means this is a potentially highly
profitable market to tap into
Within the 28 industries that use rubber
products, there are a total of 19,440

necessarily being utilized
• To determine which employee would
be best for English client outings,
translating engineering concepts, or
writing emails, Star Group should
asses each English speaking
employee in the 3 areas

The company is not using modernized
media to present to its clientele, which
diminishes rapport
A majority of the images being used are
from the 1990’s, which could create the
perception that the company doesn’t have
the technologies to keep up with a high
demand job or to ensure the best quality
The images themselves are of poor quality,
show outdated technology, and are badly
discolored
The company video needs to be
modernized as well as narrated by an
English speaking native
Improve Western Presentation Skills
• Western presentation skills are very
weak, which ultimately diminishes
Star Group’s rapport and tends to
waste valuable time
• To improve these skills, Star Group
should utilize the Carthage interns
each summer to teach the best
English speaking employees on the
important concepts of Western
presentation etiquette
• By being able to present company
material in a concise, understandable,
and timely manner will assure clients
that Star Group is respectable and

• PowerPoint presentations allow clients to judge how effectively Star Group can communicate, so
proper presentation skills are essential for establishing a trusting relationship with Western clients.
• A good presentation will display the company’s strength. These presentations are reflective of what
the company is about, so it is important that clients are paying attention on what the content is telling
them, rather than be distracted by a poor presentation.
• Become familiar with the PowerPoint before you present.
• Edits should be made before the presentation is given.
• One should be familiar with the content and order of the presentation so nothing comes as a surprise
while presenting. Scrolling through slides in the edit mode while presenting is not acceptable.
• The presenter of the PowerPoint should not be reading off of the slide, nor crouched over a
computer. It is important to have a remote to move from slide to slide, and a laser pointer to highlight
important details in the presentation. Occasional glances at the presentation are acceptable, but
most of the content should be memorized and summarized.
• Talk at an audible volume and annunciate. You are not doing this presentation in your first language,
so it may be hard to be heard and understood by listeners.
• A strong physical stance with good posture displays confidence and entices your audience. It is easy
to get distracted while watching a presentation. Do not sway back and forth, make unnecessary
body movements, or hand gestures.

English Certification Guidelines
•
•
•
Conversational skills will be used for English client outings and phone calls.
Translational skills will be used for negotiating and working with engineering specifications
with English clients.
Written skills will be utilized for writing English emails, English marketing material, and any
other extraneous English writing projects.
Example:
Employee 1
Conversation
Translation
Writing
4.6
2
Yes
Conversation: To test conversation skills, hold a 10-15 minute casual conversation with the
employees that would like their skills assessed. The essential goal of this conversation is to assess
what level the employee is in their conversational skills as to provide Mr. Yang with the list of the most
competent speakers to bring along on American client outings as well as serve as the phone contact.
When using the conversation rubric below, rank each employee using the 1-5 tier system below with 5
being excellent and 1 being hardly, if any, English skills at all. To assist Mr. Yang even further, it is up to
the interviewer to assess where at an individual sits within each tier to help rank the company
employees. Therefore, if an interviewee has moderate conversation skills, but has a very thick accent
and the interviewer has to repeat him/herself multiple times, then the employee might be given a 3.4.
Make sure the employee knows that he/she is expected to carry on a conversation. This isn’t just a Q/A
session.
English Certification
The goal of this certification process is to assess each employee who subjects themselves to testing to
rank them within the company while also providing constructive feedback so each employee knows
where he/she can improve. 3 scores will be taken. No composite is to be calculated, as each of the
three categories will serve for different functions within the company:
29
English Certification Guidelines
Instructions: In order to perform this test, there will need to be a party that speaks no English, the person
being assessed, and someone who speaks no Chinese (the American Interns). First, the American interns will
create a shape in their mind to be created out of the Legos. The interns will then, without hand gestures or
pointing, describe how to assemble the shape they have in mind step by step. The interviewee will then have
to translate to the 3rd party that only speaks Chinese how to make this shape. For example: take 4 green 2x4
and create a rectangle with all pieces on the same plane. Then take 2 red 2x8 pieces and lay them on top of
the green pieces perpendicular so that there is now a rectangular prism that is 2 levels/planes high. Recreate
this shape. Now there should be two rectangular prisms. Lay the prisms parallel side by side and touching.
Take a blue 2x8 and connect the two prisms by laying the 2x8 perpendicular to the prisms so that half of the
2x8 is on each rectangular prism. Make sure the 2x8 is in the center of the prisms.
English Certification
Translation: This test will result in a “yes, we succeeded” “We succeeded, but it was an extreme challenge”
“No, we really did not succeed.” To make this scalable, 3 will represent the “yes, we succeeded” and 1 will
represent “No, we really did not succeed.”
This test will require the use of the company’s Legos.
This should be a mandatory test for those who scored 4 or higher on the conversation, while open to
volunteers for those who think they can do it who scored less than a 4. This should be semi-difficult to perform
even going from English to English.
Again, the goal of this exercise is to find the best employee to use in negotiations and engineering
specifications.
30
English Certification Guidelines
These prompts should be given in Chinese, so that no issues with oral skills affect the employee.
If the employee can adequately express an idea in writing that does not require interpretation and guesswork by
the interviewee, then they should be given a “yes.” However, if the employee’s written work doesn’t make
sense, requires excessive effort by the reader to interpret, then the employee should be given a “no.” If giving
out a “yes,” ensure that the written work of this employee would be adequate to send to an English client without
the English client having to ask for clarification.
Guidelines: No employee should see the rubric or their score. No employee should know that they are being
scored within a competition-like setting. After completing each assessment, the participant is to leave the room
and allow the interviewers to discuss areas of improvement, and then deliver suggestions for improvements to
the employee. Once all employees have taken the assessments, 4 excel sheets with ranking should be given to
Mr. Yang (1 for each assessment and one showing each person’s overall like the Employee 1 example above).
English Certification
Written: When assessing writing skills, either a “yes” or “no” should be given. To test this skill, ask the
employee to write an email in English describing:
• The client’s product will be shipped later than expected due to an unexpected event such as poor raw
material quality or machinery failure.
• Star Group requesting to become a supplier of O Rings for Company X for their engines on model ABC of
their automotive line.
• An invitation to a Star Group presentation to learn what the company can offer as a supplier of rubber
manufactured goods.
