Star Group also aims to attain $20,000,000 USD in revenue from the US market by 2015. Current Adverse Conditions: Star Group is currently facing 3 primary issues. Star Group has a very small footprint in the US market. The company has very few clients as well as a limited US marketing channel, no US sales offices, or American sales representatives, though the company does utilize two manufacturing agents. Communication with potential US clients is very limited, and the presentation material for English clients has subpar English, thus diminishing the company’s rapport. Also, there is no team within sales that is specifically trained, nor qualified, to handle interactions with English speaking clientele. Lastly, Star Group is not engaging in any activity to promote brand awareness in the US. Presently, Star Group uses supplier portals as the only means of contacting US companies. The importance of presentations to Western clients is significant. Practicing and going over the presentation beforehand is something that is essential for a successful presentation from a Western perspective. Presentation Lessons PowerPoint Presentation Lessons • PowerPoint presentations allow clients to judge how effectively Star Group can communicate, so proper presentation skills are essential for establishing a trusting relationship with Western clients. • A good presentation will display the company’s strength. These presentations are reflective of what the company is about, so it is important that clients are paying attention on what the content is telling them, rather than be distracted by a poor presentation. • Become familiar with the PowerPoint before you present. • Edits should be made before the presentation is given. • One should be familiar with the content and order of the presentation so nothing comes as a surprise while presenting. Scrolling through slides in the edit mode while presenting is not acceptable. • The presenter of the PowerPoint should not be reading off of the slide, nor crouched over a computer. It is important to have a remote to move from slide to slide, and a laser pointer to highlight important details in the presentation. Occasional glances at the presentation are acceptable, but most of the content should be memorized and summarized. • Talk at an audible volume and annunciate. You are not doing this presentation in your first language, so it may be hard to be heard and understood by listeners. • A strong physical stance with good posture displays confidence and entices your audience. It is easy to get distracted while watching a presentation. Do not sway back and forth, make unnecessary body movements, or hand gestures. 28 English Certification Guidelines • • • Conversational skills will be used for English client outings and phone calls. Translational skills will be used for negotiating and working with engineering specifications with English clients. Written skills will be utilized for writing English emails, English marketing material, and any other extraneous English writing projects. Example: Employee 1 Conversation Translation Writing 4.6 2 Yes Conversation: To test conversation skills, hold a 10-15 minute casual conversation with the employees that would like their skills assessed. The essential goal of this conversation is to assess what level the employee is in their conversational skills as to provide Mr. Yang with the list of the most competent speakers to bring along on American client outings as well as serve as the phone contact. When using the conversation rubric below, rank each employee using the 1-5 tier system below with 5 being excellent and 1 being hardly, if any, English skills at all. To assist Mr. Yang even further, it is up to the interviewer to assess where at an individual sits within each tier to help rank the company employees. Therefore, if an interviewee has moderate conversation skills, but has a very thick accent and the interviewer has to repeat him/herself multiple times, then the employee might be given a 3.4. Make sure the employee knows that he/she is expected to carry on a conversation. This isn’t just a Q/A session. English Certification The goal of this certification process is to assess each employee who subjects themselves to testing to rank them within the company while also providing constructive feedback so each employee knows where he/she can improve. 3 scores will be taken.
