Reasons for Linux on System z Success
Save the organization money
Proximity to z/OS data/apps
Management wants to get more out of
our MF investment
Better performance for certain
workloads
Energy efficiency
Consolidation of x86 server
environment
IT management has a 'mainframe-first‘
mentality
Improved security
Business requires higher SLAs for
services
Sampling of comments
• Out of power because of distributed buildout.
• Relatively easy disaster recovery
• IT management knows, although won't admit it, that
stability is better on the mainframe.
• Core or PVU licenses which with regard to IFL's were the
lowest cost option for deploying the workload, in our case
Websphere MQ.
• Better stability and support. Support meaning the people mainframe attitude about availability.
Sampling of comments
• Management was all about getting the most out of their
investment, and saw that through Capacity Planning
Reports, they were saving significant money on costs by
implementing SuSE linux on System z.
• With budget constraints of past few years, provisioning of
new Intel or VMWare hardware has driven more workload
to the "existing" z/VM virtualization, combining that with
Oracle DB Licensing costs has been the trend of late.....

Reasons for Linux on System z Failure
Distributed team outplays us in the political game
with upper management
Management is committed to get off the
mainframe
Management is no longer investing in the
mainframe
3270 interfaces scared away Linux and operational
users
Management is concerned about long term hiring
of z/VM skilled workers
I'm tired of fighting for the platform
Non technical
Reason indicate
We need to market
Better. Use Mainframe50
Materials.
VM platform was not a good technical fit to
support target workloads
Sampling of comments
• Windows is the only real computer system. After all, Bill
Gates invented computing when he wrote Windows.
VMware discovered virtualization because it really is just
for running more Windows servers.
• Management keeps saying they are getting rid of the
mainframe (zOS & zVSE) but they know they are not going
to for many years. They have said this since the 90s.
Sampling of comments
• We still have political issues, depending on the architects
du jour. The folks using it are very pleased.
• Management keeps saying they are getting rid of the
mainframe (zOS & zVSE) but they know they are not
going to for many years. They have said this since the
90s.

Cloud vs System management
In today’s meeting we have a mixture of topics in this space.
I believe there is a big difference between systems management and cloud.
 Cloud is about control to end users and developers
 System Management is about IT departments managing systems
Both have goals of optimizing systems and reducing costs.
Companies need to decide when to evolve existing systems and processes to be
more cloud like vs. when to acquire a pre packaged cloud solution.
I believe Timing, Expectations and Qualities of Service will be driving decision.
I hope today’s discuss inspires ideas you can take back to your organization to lead
these discussions.
