Support meaning the people mainframe attitude about availability. Sampling of comments • Management was all about getting the most out of their investment, and saw that through Capacity Planning Reports, they were saving significant money on costs by implementing SuSE linux on System z. • With budget constraints of past few years, provisioning of new Intel or VMWare hardware has driven more workload to the "existing" z/VM virtualization, combining that with Oracle DB Licensing costs has been the trend of late..... © 2014 IBM Corporation Reasons for Linux on System z Failure Distributed team outplays us in the political game with upper management Management is committed to get off the mainframe Management is no longer investing in the mainframe 3270 interfaces scared away Linux and operational users Management is concerned about long term hiring of z/VM skilled workers I'm tired of fighting for the platform Non technical Reason indicate We need to market Better. Use Mainframe50 Materials. VM platform was not a good technical fit to support target workloads Sampling of comments • Windows is the only real computer system. After all, Bill Gates invented computing when he wrote Windows. VMware discovered virtualization because it really is just for running more Windows servers. • Management keeps saying they are getting rid of the mainframe (zOS & zVSE) but they know they are not going to for many years. They have said this since the 90s. Sampling of comments • We still have political issues, depending on the architects du jour. The folks using it are very pleased. • Management keeps saying they are getting rid of the mainframe (zOS & zVSE) but they know they are not going to for many years. They have said this since the 90s. © 2014 IBM Corporation System z lowest cost platform for Cloud video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAlSkKBL160 6 © 2014 IBM Corporation The 2013 Tech Innovator Awards At the 10th annual NexTI Conference this week, the CRN Test Center honored high-tech companies that have delivered outstanding innovation over the past 12 months in one or more of 17 categories 7 http://www.crn.com/slide-shows/channel-programs/240163454/the-2013-tech-innovator-awards.htm © 2014 IBM Corporation Enterprise Linux Server-Best Choice for In-house Linux Clouds Robert Francis Group http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgibin/ssialias?subtype=WH&infotype=SA&appname=STGE_ZS_ZS_USEN&htmlfid=ZSL03315USEN#loaded 8 © 2014 IBM Corporation JavaScript ® on Linux on System Z IBM SDK for Node.js™, Version 1.1 Combine modern web JavaScript + Node.js applications with the benefits of System Z hardware, monitoring, and security High Performance JavaScript for Linux on System Z Highly scalable, event-driven platform with non-blocking I/O Thousands of concurrent connections with minimal overhead Unified JavaScript ecosystem for client and server Up to 29% better performance over Intel on AcmeAir* One of the fastest growing eco-systems +93k modules @ npmjs.org System Z Connectivity Co-locate Node.js applications for reduced latency accessing z/OS data/services Security and Dependability Leverages the trusted environments of System Z to maximize security and uptime of critical Node.js applications. I believe there is a big difference between systems management and cloud. Cloud is about control to end users and developers System Management is about IT departments managing systems Both have goals of optimizing systems and reducing costs. Companies need to decide when to evolve existing systems and processes to be more cloud like vs. when to acquire a pre packaged cloud solution. I believe Timing, Expectations and Qualities of Service will be driving decision. I hope today’s discuss inspires ideas you can take back to your organization to lead these discussions. 12 © 2014 IBM Corporation System z SUSE SLES 12 update Patrick Quairoli, SUSE , Global Alliance Director, Linux Advocate © 2012 IBM Corporation System z IBM Enterprise Cloud System Deep Dive Kershaw Mehta, IBM, STSM Chief Cloud Architect for System Z © 2012 IBM Corporation One last thought before break Value of council is the experts in room.
