Why STEM Education?
Our evolving knowledge-based economy demands agile and innovative critical thinkers
and problem solvers.
Increasingly, developing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
skills and competencies is a vehicle for developing critical thinkers and entrepreneurial
innovators.
However, traditionally underserved populations in STEM education and underrepresented
populations in STEM fields (poor, minority/ELL, rural, female) often do not have access to
– or do not perceive access to – high quality STEM education and experiences – THIS
RESULTS IN AN OPPORTUNITY GAP
Excellence and equity in STEM education and experiences will enable Colorado to close
the opportunity gap while simultaneously ensuring we are preparing students with
employable skills and meeting current and future workforce needs.
