DUAL-MODE GSM/CDMA
RADIO DEVICES
Different radio technology choices:
»
»
Intermec (CN50) and Motorola (ES400, MC65) have introduced rugged dual-mode radio PDAs
which support both GSM and CDMA WWAN networks.
Psion has announced the EP10, a rugged PDA with option for either GSM (HSPA+) or CDMA,
which is a better solution for the vast majority (>95%) of all users.
Dual-mode GSM/CDMA radio devices:
Psion EP10:
» PLUS: Offers operational benefits to enterprises
» PLUS: Latest “3.8G” dedicated GSM HSPA+ radio
»
»
25
to redeploy devices globally and regionally, and
to negotiate better cellular plans by shifting
carriers.
MINUS: Dual-mode radios benefit a limited user
base given global GSM coverage. Only 4% of
US business subscribers would benefit from
roaming between networks (Gartner) if general
roaming agreements between carriers existed
(and they don’t). Roaming units would have to
have accounts with two carriers.
MINUS: Existing dual-mode radios devices offer
slower data upload and download for GSM
HSPA+ WAN and have opted for older slower
processors further reducing processing speed
across applications.
psion.com | ingenuityworking.com
»
»
»
enables much faster data transfer across
applications compared to dual-mode options (3x
uplink and 2x downlink).
PLUS: Supports fully featured WiFi with “n”
protocol.
PLUS: Faster computing across applications with
latest Texas Instruments AM3715 Sitara ARM
microprocessor at 800 MHz.
FUTURE: Psion is investigating future dual-mode
radio technology options that do not compromise
the performance and functionality customers are
looking for in a compact design.
