ASHRAE Annual Conference Sustainability Project Denver Rescue Mission Energy Efficiency Upgrades 1130 Park Avenue West, Denver, CO 80205 Learn More @ www.ASHRAEDenver2013.org 2013 WHO... Our local ASHRAE chapter membership community WHAT... In-depth energy assessment, technical design assistance, and the potential for high efficiency system installations 2013 WHY... Since 2008, each host city ASHRAE chapter has conducted a sustainability demonstration project of their choosing The Project • 3-story, 23,000 sq.ft. building built in 1928 • Tens of thousands of people come to this facility each year for shelter, food, and support 2013 The Facility • Offices, two chapels, a library, a kitchen, a clinic, a dormitory and other ancillary spaces • 3 meals per day, dorms open each night 2013 HVAC Systems • Large boilers and steam radiators with old valves • Constant volume make-up air unit (MAU) for dorms • Constant exhaust for showers • (4) split system AC units (offices, library, clinic) • (4) evap cooling units (dorm, chapel, dining room) 2013 Historical Energy Use 2013 Utility Data • High EUI and Cost 2013 Utility Data • Typical profile but high use 2013 Project Goals: • Help the facility operate more sustainably with lower energy use and better Indoor Air Quality - Lower annual energy costs over 30% 2013 Energy Efficiency Upgrades 2013 1. Lighting Upgrade 2. Replacement of (4) Split Systems 3. Installation of DDC System 4. Steam System Upgrades 5. Replacement of MAU with ERV 6. Replacement of (2) DHW Heaters, Increased Capacity, Low Flow Shower Heads 7. Installation of Solar DHW System ECM: Lighting Upgrade • Currently 2 and 4-ft T-12 with magnetic ballasts • Older exterior lights • Limited occupancy sensors • Older Exit Signs • Project: Upgrade fixtures and add sensors 2013 ECM: Replace Split Systems • Replacing (4) units offices, library, clinic • New units are 21 SEER* @ ARI Conditions *SEER = cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period(BTU/W*hr) 2013 ECM: Installation of DDC System • Tie together HVAC equipment, zone thermostats, on/off enable • Provide equipment scheduling, temperature control, unoccupied setback, and remote access 2013 ECM: Steam System Upgrades • Thermostatic valves and steam traps in disrepair • Replace valves and steam traps • Address system leaks 2013 ECM: Replacement of Make-Up Air Unit (MAU) with Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) • Tie restroom exhaust into ERV to capture heat • Continuous ventilation for better IAQ 2013 ECM: Replacement of (2) DHW Heaters, Increased Capacity, Low Flow Showers • Currently only (2) 80 gal tanks • Adding more capacity and upgrading to 86% efficiency 2013 Energy Saving Estimates ECM# Energy Conservation Measure 1 Retrofit Lighting - Upgrade T12 to T8, occ sensors, exterior lights, exit signs 2 Replace Split System Air Conditioning Units 3 Upgrade HVAC Controls - Central DDC Control 4 Reduce Steam Leakage and Replace Steam Control Valves 5 Replace 3rd Floor MAU with HRV (Dorm/Shower/Restroom) 6 Replace Domestic Hot Water Heaters, Low Flow Shower Heads 7 Install Solar Domestic Hot Water Estimated Annual Electric Savings (kWh/yr) Estimated Demand Savings (kW/peak month) 45,712 7.1 -328 $ 3,857 9,842 4.4 0 $ 1,314 14,942 0.0 3,697 $ 3,655 0 0.0 957 $ 634 0 0.0 4,324 $ 2,863 0 0.0 4,704 $ 3,114 0 0.0 1,892 $ 1,253 Estimated Estimated Annual Gas Annual Savings Energy (therms/yr) Savings ($/yr) Total Annual Estimated Savings ($/yr): $16,689 Current Annual Utility Cost ($/yr): $ 51,477.68 % Savings from Current Annual Cost: 32% 2013 Team and Fundraising 2013 Thank you Project Team!
