Teaching Today
In this new age when change has become a permanent feature of our lives, let us
review the dynamic changes that have taken place in the process of teaching and
learning. So what is teaching today? It is the process of unlocking the child's
potential to maximize his own performance. Thus, the role of a teacher today, is
that of a catalyst and a facilitator.
By setting a conducive climate, a teacher helps the pupil to discover solutions and
through these solutions, his own path for growth. A teacher promotes self
sufficiency and helps the pupil to explore his talents and grow infinitely. The
supportive relationship between the teacher and the learner and the learner –
centered style of communication reduces the inner obstacles to performance such
as fear, inferiority complex, etc. And thus facilitates a healthy and a life-long
learning.
In this modern era of technology, instructing, telling, threatening (you must have
observed and experienced) – are hardly likely to ignite an intrinsic motivation and
ownership for learning. Hence today, a wise teacher helps his pupils to learn (not
teach them), she/he helps them to work with joy (not fear), to feel big (not small)
In this way, an effective teacher helps the pupil to raise his consciousness and
awareness and take responsibility for his own choices and actions. Thus she/he
empowers the pupil making his/her process of learning and development selfdirected.
Teaching today is replaced by coaching…it is not simply an
activity but a philosophy that translates itself into a way to
lead…..

Thus a teacher is not mere a teacher but a coach who nurtures the little angels of
today who will sparkle tomorrow and their whole life through.
Parents being the first guru or facilitator play an equally vital role in moulding the
child who is just a lump of clay when born. Parents and facilitators can work hand
in hand and bring about a healthy growth in children today. Attending parent
teacher meetings, workshops, will enable the parents to learn about the progress of
the child and also the activities the child is involved and interested in. It will also
keep the parents updated with the latest trends in education and classroom
teaching-learning transactions and coach them in the most beautiful way in the
least number of hours. Keeping this new definition of “coaching” in our mind, let
us together work to our fullest potential to reach our deeper level of consciousness
and in turn raise up the stars of tomorrow by nurturing in them great virtues to be
passed on to the generations to come.

Importance of Values in Life
It gives me great pleasure to share with you some views and perspectives that I
have gained this year. According to me our institution has achieved success due to
effective team at various levels and the leadership of our heads and the support and
guidance of our management. As it is said that learning should
not only be restricted to the four walls of a classroom but
beyond that. In short learning should be carried out with fun.
Education today aims at the all round development of a child.
Education is no longer restricted to academics alone but other

areas like Arts, music, computer, and environmental science also becomes a part of
it. It aims to make a child, an individual who can excel in any of these fields.
The entire approach towards curriculum is child oriented and works in that
direction. The government also has taken initiatives to create awareness about
this approach. The parents of present generation do agree to this concept and are
personally taking efforts to coach their wards for various co-curricular and extracurricular activities. While catering to the need of a child and in the effort of
making him an all-rounder, have we forgotten to implant the most important
system in his/her life – the Value System?

Do children need to be taught values? Or do we expect them to learn it and imbibe
it from their elders like the way we did? But do we adults around them practice
these values? Do we have the time to sit next to them and discuss about these
values or narrate any stories that depict these values? Values do play an important
role in our lives. They are the base of our relationships, our future. We all want our
kids to grow up to be successful adults, but we are mainly responsible for the way
they turn up. The family dynamics don't exist as they once did. Respect and taking
responsibility are two fundamental values. Spending time together with children
will make it easier for them to imbibe values.
Values are not just words, Values are what we live by. Young minds are like
sponge and absorb information at an astonishing rate, but when all this
information comes from trash we should get worried. So let
us walk that extra mile to make our children into better adults
with a strong value system.

FUN WITH LANGUAGE
It is always fun teaching language to students, especially the 4 and 5 year old ones. I
always walk to my class thinking, 'What new should I do before I begin the class.'
Usually, I begin the class with the attendance. I either call the student by their
surname or initials.
Once I thought of calling them by using a part of their names. E.g., 'Moon' for
'Muntazim', 'Nav' for 'Arnav', 'Rush' for 'Arush' and so on, while doing so I called a
boy named “Swayam” as “Yum”. All of sudden the child got up and said, “No!
Teacher don't call me by that name”. I was taken aback, and immediately
apologized and asked him if I could call him “Swa”. He was okay with this name.
I continued with my daily activities but at the back of my mind a thought kept
troubling me. 'Why did the child not like the name?' It was during the break time
that I got a chance to talk to him. I asked him “Why did you not like the name
“yum”. Immediately he answered “My mummy told me that “Yam” is a bad
person. It was then I realized that child meant 'Yam'- the God of death. Whereas I
meant 'Yum' i.e. something that is delicious.
So as teachers we need to be very cautious, what we say and what is interpreted by
the child. I would like to share another incident. It was outdoor playtime and I was
taking my students to the play area. While moving downstairs I realized that one
girl was not in the line. I went back to check. I saw the girl was talking to one of the
lady teacher. All teachers enjoyed talking to her because she would wonderfully
blend Marathi and English during conversation. I went to
them and asked what the matter is. The girl replied “He
talking to me, so me no come”. The teacher immediately
corrected the girl saying, ”Don't call me 'He' I am 'She'.”
When girl said “He” she meant 'a female' in Marathi, whereas

the teacher interpreted 'he' as 'a male' in English. While walking down the
staircase, I realized that a girl was giggling. I asked her to share the joke with me.
She said “Teacher told me to call her 'she'. The girl interpreted 'she' as 'potty' in
Marathi.
I am sure that many such incidents might have gone unnoticed. So as teachers we
have to be careful of what we say. We need to make sure whatever we want to
convey to students in English has been rightly understood by them so that they
don't interpret it differently.
