YTTERJÄRNA CULTURAL CENTRE
These buildings house everything
from a hotel, shops and restaurants to
housing, offices, rehearsal and music
rooms. Several influential exhibitions
dealing with architecture and landscape art have been put on in Ytterjärna. Conferences, lectures and artistic
performances are continually held.

Starting at the beginning of the 1930s,
a number of activities inspired by anthroposophy have grown up in Ytterjärna and its surroundings. These include
a culture centre, hospital, schools, biodynamic farms, dairy, a market garden,
homes for people with disabilities, and
many others. Artist Arne Klingborg was
one of the founders of Kulturcentrum
Järna (then Rudolf Steinerseminariet),
which was established in 1964. Activities were initially housed in Vita
Huset, a building from the turn of the
century built by the painter Bruno
Liljefors. As activities increased, architect Erik Asmussen was commissioned to draw the buildings that can
today be seen around Kulturhuset.

BACKGROUND
ARCHITECTURE
The world-famous architecture at Ytterjärna Kulturcentrum is from Erik Asmussen and his colleagues in cooperation
with Arne Klingborg and the colour designer Fritz Fuchs. Unique surroundings
have been created by the use of organic forms, natural materials, light
and colour. Each house is itself a work
of art. The way in which architecture
can support an activity can be seen

This magnificent building houses a theatre, restaurant, café, conference facilities and offices. The building was opened in 1992 and has developed in the
short period since then into a centre of culture with a rich programme. Here,
you can experience everything from grandiose opera, dance and symphonies
to solo concerts, one-man shows and circus performances. And much more.
Kulturhuset was built to inspire innovative thinking in all areas of life. The excellent acoustics, the visual beauty and the wall sculptures join in harmony to
form a unique concert hall with space for an audience of 500. The building was
drawn by architect Erik Asmussen and in 2001 won the silver medal in the competition to find Sweden’s most loved modern building.

Enjoy coffee with buns and cakes from our own bakery in the foyer of Kulturhuset.
The organic and biodynamic ingredients speak for themselves. We have our
own blend of coffee and the beans are ground immediately before the coffee is
brewed. We have close collaboration with farmers and other producers in the
area, and the food reflects the natural turning of the seasons. Lunch is served
every day, and the restaurant is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings
during May-September, unless events in Kulturhuset prevent this. Telephone to
book a table for the evening.

SKYSPACE
This is the most northerly Skyspace in the world, designed by James Turrell and built following Swedish traditions using materials from the neighbourhood. The inside of the installation
consists of walls painted white and a white-painted cupola that is open to the sky. It has also a
magnificent marble floor of the Swedish stone known as “Diamant bas”. The floor and seating
are heated, making it possible to visit the Skyspace throughout the year, no matter what the
weather. Sitting in the Skyspace during the day gives the experience of the sky being brought
down through the opening in the roof. It brings the heavens close and captures sounds from the
natural world around. From 30 minutes before sunset until 60-90 minutes after, visitors sitting in
the Skyspace witness a colour performance in the sky. This is a relaxing and meditative slow art
performance that gives the opportunity for reflection and stillness.

the farm has operated since that time as a biodynamic farm,
mainly producing milk. All milk is delivered to Järna Mejeri
on the same site, to produce cheese, butter, yoghurt, fresh
milk and other products. The site also is home to Nibble
Trädgård, Nibble Bageri, Nibble Såg and, not least, Järna
Naturbruksgymnasium (since 1999). A close collaboration

JÄRNA NATURBRUKSGYMNASIUM
(AGRICULTURAL UPPER SECONDARY SCHOOL)
Located since 1999 at Nibble Gård, which has conducted biodynamic cultivation for milk
production since the 1960s, the Järna Naturbruksgymnasium is Sweden’s only upper secondary school focused on ecological-biodynamic cultivation and animal husbandry. The
school follows Sweden’s national curriculum for the agricultural program, and the education is based on the Waldorf theory of education.
Students work with the animals and the land, market gardens and the forest. By weaving
theory and practice, the students learn an overall ecological approach that can be applied
in all areas of life. Järna Naturbruksgymnasium is happy to receive study visits, and can
accommodate such visits also at weekends. Call us to book a date.

The northern wing of the Library house the architects who draw buildings inspired by anthroposophy and ecology. The current architect group is the successor to Erik Asmussens Arkitektkontor, whose work included many of the buildings at Ytterjärna Kulturcentrum.
Those who commission work from the group value the focus on, and the experience from,
working with materials, form and colour to stimulating and functional unity. The office has
vast experience of working in this way, something that the customers also appreciate.
Examples of projects are Waldorf schools, buildings for the healthcare sector, residential
properties for several families, and one-family houses. We welcome study visits.
