Sixth International Consultation 17-19 October 2012 Durban, South Africa Thematic Breakout Sessions Reaching out to marginalized children and young people Friday 19th October 2012 Mrs PH Wong Board Member, Childline Malaysia CHILDLINE MALAYSIA • • • Childline Malaysia, an NGO initiated the establishment of 15999 Childline with the Government Launched in November 2010 Within the last 2 years, more than 9,000 calls for information, support and help have been received CHILDLINE MALAYSIA • • • The services to children are a shared responsibility between the government and Childline Malaysia and other volunteer organisations that forms the child protection system Infrastructure and operations of the helpline are funded and supported by the government Childline M’sia main role is education, outreach, promotion to children and public and establishing partner networks for interventions, care and rehabilitaiton Call Stats 2011- Reasons for contacting 1828 Abuse and Violence Info Requested 1192 Family Relationships 49 232 5 Psychosocial Mental Health 787 29 167 13 23 140 93 5 2 Abuse and Violence • • • • • • 4.892 cases of child abuse 25% of abusers were mothers 18% were fathers /step fathers 20% were teens’ partners Girl victims were twice as many as boys Bullying in schools is a major concern CHILD TRAFFICKING & SALE OF BABIES • Malaysia is distinctive for representing all three points in the chain: a source, destination and transit country for human trafficking. REFUGEE, STATELESS & MIGRANT CHILDREN STREET CHILDREN 30,000 stateless children particularly in E Malaysia 20,000 refugee children from (Myanmar, Afghanistan, Cambodia) TEEN PREGNANCY / UNDERAGE MARRIAGE / HIV/AIDS /MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES In 2011,health clinics reported 18,000 teen pregnancies.
