NETBOOKS in MY CLASSROOM!
Not all students have access to technology
Not all students have the same skills
Not all students need to experience the same information at the same time
Not all teachers Differentiate their Instruction
Not all students “get it” the first time
Not all students are successful
Not all students need to be re-taught/retested
Students only experiencing discussions and comments from students at the same level
Students only experiencing work habits and attitudes of students at the same level
Students identifying themselves as low achievers (labeling, low expectations, group mentality and attitude)
Student is in more control of their own learning experience
Students able to review, accelerate, or remediate at their own pace
Parents can be more involved in the extended learning process
Teachers able to “team teach” with themselves resulting in more time, better monitoring of students with less re-teaching and tutoring issues.

You need to reflect on how to RE-ARRANGE your classroom to manage Netbook users effectively. If you can not see their screens, then they will be tempted to be off task. Make SURE you can see
You will need to give clear direct instructions about what should be accomplished when the
Netbooks are opened and being used by students. Rubrics (check lists) are the best way to give students clear instructions of what they are to accomplish.
“I want to see eyeballs”: Before you try to give instructions, make sure you have their attention.
Use “1-2-3 Eyes on Me” if you want them to close their laptops for a lengthy set of instructions or to begin a new activity. Explain to class that as soon as they hear “1”, they are to put their laptops into
“sleep” (Fn +F4) if they have been “surfing” and
“hibernation” (Fn + F12)mode if they have a project they are working on and then close the lid.

Move Around the Classroom: Just because students are interacting with a computer, does
NOT mean they don’t need your attention, encouragement, re-direction, critique, or praise.
Do NOT plant yourself behind your desk while
Netbooks are being used! You will OFTEN catch students off task…much easier than you could when they were only “thinking” off task. Now you have the opportunity to catch them and re-direct them as never before.
Consider Group Work: Some of the most memorable (and frustrating) instructional moments have taken place during team work. The synergistic advantage of working in groups incorporates investigation, negotiation, discussion, collaboration, and enhanced productivity.
In Group Work NOT everyone needs to have a computer up and running. Select a single person to be the scribe for the group discussion or the researcher for the group investigation.
Use Students as Experts: In the 21 st Learning
Environment, everyone is learning – including the teacher. Ask students for help or assign them to become the expert. Managing the human resource in your room is the most valuable method of engaging students.
If they TEACH it, they will KNOW it. Use students to peer tutor other students. Everyone in the room is responsible for learning and teaching.
Engaging students in 24/7 instruction
Use TigerTube Blogs to (Hold them Accountable):
Require reflection on the day’s lesson
Require “value added” comments on Your Blog
Require uploaded projects (PowerPoint, Videos, Audio,
Writing Samples) to demonstrate understanding
Require presentations to be uploaded and presented orally from student’s Blog.
Require students to generate their own questions for classroom discussions from their Blog.
Require students to take an assessment from Your Blog.
Using Your Blog:
Require students to download from your Blog a Template, a
PowerPoint, a Rubric, an Assignment, a Quiz, a Handout, etc., save it on their computer, work on the product, and then turn it in (by email, by uploading it to their Blog, by printing it, etc.)
Place higher-order discussion questions on your Blog and ask students to use the “Comment Section” of your Blog to write their “value added” responses.
Put all the research links on your Blog. These are the only links the students need in order to participate in the assigned activities. This stops the “wasting time” of net surfing AND you know exactly where the students should be on the Internet.
Allow students to “charge” their Netbooks on your back table during class, lunch, or assemblies.
The Netbooks need charging during the day. As students move through the day, they will be looking for classrooms where they can leave their laptops during band, athletics, lunch, assemblies, etc.
Make your room available to them and keep your room locked if you leave your classroom.
If a student’s laptop will not connect to the
Wireless, let them connect to the network using an Ethernet Cable.
Ethernet Cables will be provided on your back tables along with the surge protector. If a computer needs some work done on it remotely by the Tech Dept, it is always better to have it connected via an Ethernet Cable than by wireless.
If you're planning to use a specific piece of software with students, give them 1-2 days' warning to make sure they have time to verify it's functioning properly.
Your students don't have admin rights on the machine, make sure they have access to necessary software on the current laptop image.
If you plan to use an online service or software package in class for the first time, make sure you test it several days in advance. Do not make your lack of planning, a Tech Department Emergency.
Make sure your students understand that you require headphones in your classroom.
If you decide your lesson will require other hardware, such as cameras, consider having students bring their own. Many kids have their own digital cameras and would be happy to bring them to school. Send a note home to parents explaining the need and the responsibilities of the student.
THE IMPORTANCE OF REFLECTION
After you try something new, take note of what went well and what didn't. Revise for the next time you need to teach the unit and prep in advance. It will save you time the next year/term. If you feel students will need extra skill reinforcement, notify your Tech Apps teacher for assistance in providing students with those skills.
USE YOUR BLOG to TEACH. EDIT YOUR BLOG after each class by reflecting on what went well and what needed further explanation. Your teaching will improve each time you edit your Blog.
Project-based curriculum is well supported by technology. Project-based curriculum also supports higher-order thinking, problem-solving, research & communication skills.
Support project-based learning by placing your expectations, evaluation tool (Rubric), and step-bystep instructions on your Blog so that students can access 24/7.
Use Outlook Calendar to send Appointments to student emails to remind them of project due dates.
Take advantage of Web 2.0 tools (blogs, wikis,
GoogleApps, DropBox) for classroom projects and student collaboration in class and out. Remember that one of the biggest advantages to technology use is the ability to extend the learning environment and expand beyond the boundaries of your classroom.
Students who are engaged beyond the classroom learn more, learn deeper, retain information longer and are able to apply their learning across multiple domains.
Remember, we log all student behavior on the laptops – in school and out. If you think there is a SERIOUS problem that we should be aware of, please let us know.
Do NOT punish the whole class for what one or a few students try to pull in your class.
The Tech Department will take care of any students who violate the AUP or Laptop
Collaborate, collaborate, collaborate. Your peers both within and outside your district may have great ideas to offer about classroom management and techniques/strategies to use in the classroom.

Allow 2-3 minutes for students to get laptops up and running and to put them away properly at the end of class.
We do not want to see students walking the halls with their laptops out of the carrying case.
Currently we do not have very many printers that allow students to print using Windows 7 operating system. Therefore, students will not often be able to print from their Netbooks.
Do not use hardcopies to grade student work. Instead use their Blog or a digital copy to grade work
Have students upload product to their Blog or a shared network folder and the teacher can print the product from their teacher XP machine…if they need a hardcopy.
START CLASS with your Blog posting what will be required and objectives for the class.
Post information to let students know immediately if they will be required to use their laptops during class. If not, let them charge laptops as needed.
