INTRODUCTION

THE TECHNICAL TEXTILE SECTOR IN INDIA IS LIKELY TO GROW
BY 11% YEAY ON YEAR AND IS EXPECTED TO ATTAIN A MARKET
SIZE OF $14.8 BILLION BY 2012-13 FROM THE CURRENT SIZE OF
$9.9 BILLION

PRESENTLY MAJOR PRODUCERS OF TECHNICAL TEXTILES ARE IN
DEVELOPED COUNTRIES OUT OF WHICH USA, EUROPE AND JAPAN
COMPRISE ABOUT 70 %.

ALTHOUGH, GLOBALLY THERE HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANT GROWTH
OF TECHNICAL TEXTILES IN THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES, LARGE
INVESTMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE RECENT PAST IN THE
DEVELOPING COUNTRIES ALSO IN THIS HIGHLY SPECIALIZED AND
TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN AREA.

CONCLUSION

IN MOST INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES, THE TREND IN VARIOUS SECTORS OF
TEXTILE INDUSTRY INDICATES THAT THE USE OF CONVENTIONAL TEXTILES HAS
REACHED A STATIC LEVEL AND THEIR MANUFACTURE HAS BECOME HIGHLY
COMPETITIVE AND OFTEN UNVIABLE.

THE RECENT FOCUS HAS, THEREFORE, BEEN ON THE VALUE-ADDED TECHNICAL
TEXTILES THAT HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO MEET FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS FOR
PRECISION APPLICATIONS.

IN ORDER TO MEET THE TARGET OF $14.8 BILLION BY 2012-13 FROM THE
CURRENT SIZE OF $9.9 BILLION, INDIA HAS TO INCUR SUBSTANTIAL INVESTMENT
IN INFRASTRUCTURE, TECHNOLOGY, R & D AND STANDARDIZATION AND IT IS
HOPED THAT INDIA WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NEW
OPPORTUNITY IN THIS AREA ARISING DUE TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF NEW
TECHNOLOGIES WHICH WILL PAVE PATH FOR THE FUTURE.

IN VIEW OF HEALTH AND PUBLIC SAFETY, THE INDIAN STANDARDS ON PROTECH
AND MEDTECH COULD BE MADE MANDATORY.
