SURTREAT FROM MATERIALS PERFORMANCE – NACE MAGAZINE Presented by US Army Corps of Engineers New, properly constructed 2-inch concrete cover (ph 13) will inhibit corrosion of rebar. This alkalinity will decrease over time from carbon dioxide and other acidic materials penetrating the concrete and reducing the pH to below 11, at which point the natural corrosion inhibition is lost. If air and water contact the rebar, corrosion will take place, as CO2 absorbed from the atmosphere decreases the pH. Another main source of corrosion is due to chloride ions. The resulting corrosion products expand and cause the concrete to degrade and spall. CONCLUSION FROM NACE ARTICLE The data obtained in this work shows quantitatively that the PCIS application significantly reduced the corrosion rate of the rebar on tested structures. Measurements before and after application indicated projected corrosion rates were reduced by a factor of 3.5 for the penetrating corrosion inhibitor. It can be projected that the service life of these structures has been extended by more than 10 years based on the short-term data collected during this work.
