Sweden has a universal health care system that is paid for by high taxes. About
25% of their wages go towards taxes.
Due to this, doctor visits and medical emergencies are low cost in terms of direct payment. Each visit is only about 100 to 200 kr or 300 kr for a specialist.
This is equivalent to about $15 for regular visits or $45 for a specialist.
The Swedish social security system activates when a worker falls ill or becomes unemployed. The payment is linked to the worker’s previous salary.
In the case of an illness, the employer pays about 80% for sick leave.
