1 Background and Significance
1.Introduction of WHU
• one of the oldest universities in China: founded in 1893
• a comprehensive national university in modern China:
-114 undergraduate programs
-311 master's degree programs
-208 Ph.D programs
-over 50,000 students: 30,000 undergraduates and 20,000 graduate students

▶Schooling length of Chinese program candidates:
1st year: study at WHU
2nd year: study at TUM
3rd year: study either at TUM or WHU(according to the suggestion of the
supervisor)
▶Dural Degree Requirements:
1.completion of three-year study
2.successful completion of thesis defense
2 Implementation of the Program
↘Number of participants:
•in the initial phase: up to 10 students every year
•afterwards: to be adjusted
↘Tuition and other fees :
•host university: no charged tuition fees
•two universities: apply for the scholarship to CSC, DAAD etc. for students
•students: responsible for expenses such as health insurance, travel expenses
and living cost

Entry requirements:
1.major in relevant fields:
School of Resource and Environmental Science
School of Urban Design
School of Geodesy and Geomatics
School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering
State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and

2.English level (satisfy one of the conditions):
• score 80 or above in TOEFL
• 6 in IELTS
• a study evidence of one-year participation in English-taught courses

Credits and thesis:
• the credits can be transferred to each other
(1 WHU credits is equivalent to 2.7 ECTS credits and 1 ECTS credits equals
0.37 WHU credits)
• the thesis defense result at either university is accepted by the other
(final grade is averaged from the individual grades of both supervisors)

■TUM’s first double degree cooperation in China

■promote Chinese internationality of education and research in geo-spatial
informatics.
Students participation in 2011:
▶applicants: 13 WHU graduate students
▶enrolments: 10 excellent graduate students

◣100 overseas partners: realize cooperation in credit transfer, student exchange

•Get great attention:
-Leaders: senior leadership have payed full attention to this program
-Students: scientific research cooperation and the combination of available subjects
attract outstanding students to participate this program
•Seek multi-channel financial support:
-CSC funding: five graduate students each year
-WHU and TUM financial support
support for students from WHU:
▪summer school of “Spatial Statistics and Intelligent Analysis”each year
▪short-term visit to international universities and attendence of international
academic conferences

Operate creatively within existing policies:
• problems and challenges: different enrollments, academic calenders, credit
systems, examination requirements…
• innovation in policies:
-enrollment system: enroll in two universities sequently
-curricular systems: recognized mutually
-teachers: "Bi- tutor" adopted

Conclusion of the Program
Promote the construction of international cooperative platform:
▶courses: more English optional courses for German students
▶research: co-operation platform can be further strutted based on cooperative
projects
▶cooperative projects: multinational combined application of scientific projects is
in its beginning stage
