STATE CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATION (MPSC) 1. Introduction The Maharashtra Public Service Commission is a body of the Indian Government which provides suitable applicants for a variety of posts in the Government offices. Exams are conducted by the MPSC for diverse cadres of Officers in the Maharashtra State Services. There are chiefly 3 classes of cadres- Class I, Class II, and Class III. Each one of these exams has both prelims and main papers, i.e., the aspirants need to pass the MPSC Prelims Exams first and only then will they be able to appear for the MPSC Main Exams. Maharashtra Public Service Commission is the authoritative body for conducting Maharashtra State Civil Services examination in the state. Apart from the civil services examination, commission also conducts several other examinations and carries out selection process of candidates for service into varied departments of Maharashtra state government. The office of MPSC is situated in the capital Mumbai. Eligibility • To be eligible to appear for this examination a candidate must have completed minimum 19 years of age (on or before 1st April of the year in which candidate is going to appear for examination). The maximum age limit for open category candidates is 33 years. The age limit is relaxed by five years in case of candidates from reserved category. For handicapped candidates the maximum age limit is 45 years. The candidates are also required to have appropriate knowledge of Marathi language. In case of posts in the Police Department the candidates must also fulfill the prescribed requirements of physical ability. The notification regarding this examination appears in leading newspapers. The examination is conducted in following three stages: i) Preliminary Examination ii) Main/ Written Examination iii) Interview/ Personality Test Preliminary Examination Arts / Social Sciences 30 marks (History, Geography, Social Science etc) Intelligence Test 50 marks Current Affairs 30 marks Science and Technology 30 marks Commerce and Economics 30 marks (Banking sector also) Agriculture 30 marks Total 200 marks 200 Questions Time- 120 min Main Examination Generally the Main Examination is supposed to be held three and a half or four months after the result of the prelims exam is declared. This examination is held at four centers viz. Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad and Nagpur. The candidates who qualify in the Preliminarily Examination and hold University degrees of Graduation are eligible to appear for Main Examination. Personality Test (Interview) The candidates coming out successfully in the written examination are interviewed by a panel of interviewers. Marks allotted for the interview are 100. The final merit list is declared after considering the candidate's marks in the main exam and interview. Accordingly, eligible candidates are appointed at various posts. Eventually they get he appointment letter and after training they join the service.
