The 6th of January is ‘El Día de los Reyes Magos’.
On the night of the 5th, most towns in Spain hold
a parade where sweets are thrown to the
crowds from the passing floats.
Children believe the three Kings visit their house
that night, leaving presents for them.

La Nochevieja
• New year's eve is known as "Nochevieja" in Spanish.
During the countdown to midnight, the tradition is to eat
twelve grapes, one for every stroke of the clock. If you
manage to eat all the grapes in time, it is said that you
are in for a year of prosperity and good luck. People
congregate in large numbers to this, especially in Madrid.

El roscón is a sweet pastry topped
with glazed fruits and is eaten
on the night before or morning
of the 6th of January. Baked
inside are 2 surprises: a small
figurine, and a bean. If you find
the figurine it will bring you
luck, if you find the bean you
have to buy the roscón next
year.

El ‘gordo’
La lotería de navidad is drawn every year at
Christmas. Tickets cost €20 ($31.37) each and
winners receive a tenth of the prize money. The
big prize is known as ‘el gordo’ and is worth
3,000,000 euros ($4,705,660).
Traditionally, two schoolchildren draw the lottery
balls and ‘sing’ the numbers and prizes.
