People went there nearly every day. Villagers went there to pick up news. Markets, festivals and games were held here. People had lessons with the priest. Criminals could seek sanctuary in a church. People believed strongly in heaven and hell. They hoped that by going to church they’d get to heaven. The things going on in and around the church often entertained and amused people as villagers’ lives could be quite dull! How is this similar or different from today? The Structure of the Church The image comes from Bath Abbey which was rebuilt during the Medieval period in 1499. These parts you have examined reminded people in the village how important the church was. Everyone understood that they needed to obey the church in order to get to heaven. As peasants had little money, they almost always had to pay in seeds, harvested grain, animals etc. This usually caused a peasant a lot of hardship as seeds, for example, would be needed to feed a family the following year. What the Church got in tithes was kept in huge tithe barns; a lot of the stored grain would have been eaten by rats or poisoned by their urine.
