The Front Cover…
The Little White Lies front cover is different to
a regular magazine as it doesn’t feature all the
conventional aspects – for example, there are no
cover lines describing other stories in the issue
and only features a main cover line. It has very
distinctive covers that have the same layout
every month – the only change is the film that
they are representing. This is a very unique and
graphic way of creating a magazine cover and
the audience know what to expect every month.
About…
Little White Lies is a bi-monthly, British
independent movie magazine that features
writing, illustration and photography related to
cinema. Each issue of Little White Lies is
themed around a single cover film, inspiring the
design and editorial content of the entire issue.
The design of each issue of Little White Lies is
inspired by its feature film, represented on the
cover by an illustration of its lead actor. Little
White Lies' cover films have ranged from small
independent films to blockbuster releases. In 2008,
Little White Lies won its first major award: Best Designed Consumer
Target Audience…
Little White Lies is aimed at specialist film fans.
Each issue is aimed at one particular film so this
would attract anyone that has an interest in that
film and wants to learn more about it, as well as
avid film fans that purchase it monthly. The
magazine is aimed at a younger audience as the
magazines style and content is very modern and
contemporary, and predominantly features films
that are showing at the cinema (which young
people tend to do as a hobby.)
Digital Media…
A digital website, littlewhitelies.co.uk, was launched in
2006. This helped create a digital media network, where
fans of the magazine could access content and a ‘digital
version’ of the magazine on the internet. On the website,
there is a section that encourages readers to get involved
on twitter – www.twitter.com/littlewhitelies and to join
their ‘mailing list’ where regular updates are sent to
readers, involving them further. There is also a section
broadcasting their Facebook, which is a further social
networking website, aimed to encourage readers to
follow their updates. A ‘commenting’ board allows fans
to discuss the magazine/website with each other, which
creates a buzz around the topics and stories.
Creating A Brand…
Little White Lies has created their brand further through an
online shop. This is where readers can access and buy old copies
of the magazine, film prints and even a brand t-shirt. Even
though they only begun with a specialist film magazine, they
have created a marketing campaign resulting in their magazine
becoming iconic – through the use of digital network.
Front Covers…
All the Little White Lies covers are very graphic, illustrated, computerised and pop
art inspired. This reflects the young, modern audience that purchase the magazine.
It also creates a distinctive layout used in every issue which allows them to have
their own personal style. The design and presentation of the front cover is crucial to
how the magazine will sell and become popular (and is also illustrated by a
different artist every month.) The creators of this magazine have used the front
cover to reflect the content and attitude of the magazine.
