This picture shows the inside of Huntingdon Grammar School. This went on to become
Hinchingbrooke School.
We are going to focus on how Huntingdon Grammar School changed to become
Hinchingbrooke School.
You are going to find out what school life was like at 4 different points across the
history of the school.
Huntingdon Grammar
School was founded in
1565. Among its pupils
were Oliver Cromwell
and Samuel Pepys.
On 1st September
1939 the school
opened in a new
building on Brampton
Road – the same day
the war broke out.
This picture shows the
inside of the Grammar
School after reconstruction
in 1878.
In 1970 the school began to take children of all
abilities and soon became fully comprehensive. At
the same time the school changed its name, and
pupils in Year 9 and above moved to new premises in
Hinchingbrooke Park and the renovated
Hinchingbrooke House.
In groups, you are going to find out about the 4 periods in the history of the
school.
For each period you need to read the information carefully and think about the
questions it asks. You also need to fill in your copy of the table shown below.
