Vladimir and the Conversion of
Russia
• Vladimir – leader of Kievan Rus (earliest name for
people living in modern day Russia)
• Sends people out to observe different religions.
• Observers only impressed with Eastern Orthodoxy,
they were very impressed by Constantinople.
• Based on this, Vladimir names Eastern Orthodoxy
official religion of territory.

• Byzantine monks traditionally
spread Christianity.
• Most famous was Cyril,
traveled Slavic regions of

alphabet.
• Most Slavs were illiterate so
he designed an alphabet
based on Greek and their
language.
• Cyrillic alphabet – based
loosely on Greek alphabet;
still used in parts of Europe .

Ottomans (Turks) sack Constantinople in
1453.
• Byzantine culture is prominate throughout
Eastern Europe and Russia.
Reflection
• After learning about the Byzantine impact
on Russia and Eastern Europe, why is it
important the culture was spread to Russia
and Eastern Europe?
