Creativity- what is it?
“Creativity and the way children learn creatively
make up a child’s creative development.
Creativity means: the way children explore
objects and materials, the way they try to
solve problems, challenge their thinking and
make connections in their learning, and how
children think imaginatively”
(Beith et al, 2010, pg436)
Creativity
It’s that important it has its own place in the
curriculum!

Look at the EYFS and write down four subsections, for each one give an example of
how it is promoted in your setting.

Plan an activity to promote creativity
- State the age range the activity is suitable for.
- Describe the resource and how creativity can be
promoted.

also promotes (add in some suitable quotes from the
EYFS)
- What adaptations might you need to make to
ensure all can participate with this activity?
Importance of Creativity








Develops cognitive skills
Helps children to work together
Develops self-esteem and confidence
Problem solving
Uses senses to explore
Makes connections in their learning
Develops imagination
Enables children to think about how things work
Adults Role





Never Stress the end product – it’s all about
the process.
Ensure there is no competition.
Praise children for ‘their’ ideas
Value the results, consider individuality
Children's creativity develops as they go
along, and they often don’t have an end
result/product in mind.
Best Practice Check List

What do you need to consider when


How well do you support children’s creativity?
Do you tend to focus on the end product if there is
one?
Are the children allowed to experiment with toys and
try out their imaginative ideas?
List two things that you can develop either
personally or in the setting that will promote
creativity. Give these ago over the next two weeks,
you can Facebook me to let me know how you get
