Smoke Free Campus Team briefing What is a Smoke Free Campus? Smoking will not be permitted on any campus from 1 January 2015. Box Hill Institute’s smoke free policy extends to all Institute property, including: • • • all campuses in all buildings or parts of buildings under Box Hill Institute control on all semi-enclosed thoroughfares such as verandas and on all elevated walkways between buildings • • in any outdoor area in and around campus buildings in all Box Hill Institute owned/leased vehicles. Box Hill Institute values the health and wellbeing of our students, staff and visitors and the smoke free policy has been implemented to create a healthy, safe and positive environment for everyone. There are many benefits to being a smoke free campus, which include: • safeguarding the health and safety of employees, students, contractors, sub-contractors and visitors • • protection from exposure to second hand smoke • • • adhering to legislative requirements considering the health and wellbeing of all employees and students by providing and supporting smoking prevention and cessation strategies reducing the potential risk of fire maintaining a clean environment. The implementation of a smoke-free environment is an important initiative and Box Hill Institute is using a variety of media to communicate this message, including: • • • • • • • • • signage around the campus and perimeter student diary and StudentWeb website email updates to staff updated Student and Staff Codes of Conduct digital campus screens information at O Week and orientation days social media Smoke Free Campus pamphlets. One of the aims of introducing a smoke-free policy is to raise awareness of the harmful effects of ETS on others. A person in breach of the policy may be requested to stop, and may be reminded of their responsibilities under this policy. Employees who continue to breach this policy will be managed in accordance with the BHI Group Discipline Policy. Staff can play a role in our smoke free initiative by increasing awareness to those smoking on campus through signage, quit support and resources available, social media and information online. Our Code of Conduct may assist in keeping the conversation simpler and less personal. If you are comfortable having a conversation with someone smoking on campus, you can refer to campus signs or use the following tips : • remember that smoking is an addiction; sometimes smoking is associated to stress or an addiction to nicotine so it’s important to be mindful of this when explaining the policy • respectfully request the smoker to either put out the cigarette safely or move off campus grounds if they wish to keep smoking • if the person complies, remember to thank them. If the person becomes angry or confrontational, excuse yourself and report the incident to your manager or security.
