What do you know about Africa?
Think about...
•What is the climate like?
•What kinds of vegetation grow there?
• Are there any deserts?
Climate
If you travelled across Africa,
you would see many types
of climate and lots of
different plants and trees...
Climate and Vegetation
The North and
East of Africa is
hot and dry
In the “drylands” trees,
plants and grasses grow
under difficult conditions.
In some desert areas no
vegetation grows at all.
Climate and Vegetation
Vegetation is thick and green.
Close to the equator, tropical
rainforest can be found.
Equator
The centre and west of
Africa are hot and wet.
In some areas it rains all
year round.
Climate
Equator
In mountain areas ,
it can be very cold.
At the top, the
temperature drops
well below 0
degrees and you
can see snow!
TREE AID works
here, in the
Sahel.
Equator
•The Sahel is a very dry
area next to the Sahara
desert.
Although it is very dry,
325 million people still
live here!
• The Sahel crosses 12
countries.
Sahel Vegetation
Equator
•The Sahel used to be
rich in vegetation and
animals. Trees such as
the baobab, mango
and dawadawa, used
to grow here.
•Now the vegetation is
disappearing...
•Why do you think this
might be?
Deserts
The world's largest desert,
The Sahara, covers most of
north Africa.
The Sahara desert is getting
bigger every year.
Why do you think this could be?
In order to survive,
people have chopped
down lots of trees in the
Sahel. This is called
deforestation.
Once the trees are
gone, the soil becomes
dry and new plants
cannot grow.
How do you think this
affects people who live
in the Sahel?
If this continues, what
do you think will
happen in the future?
How Does TREE AID Help?
TREE AID helps people in the Sahel to plant and
protect trees. This stops the desert from growing.
