Elephant – Weaknesses
(Subconscious)
• Wants what it wants ‘now’ and does not like to make a
short-term sacrifice for long-term payoff.
• Is fearful of change, skittish, likes the status quo and has
a default setting of “survival.”
• Does not “reflect” in the traditional sense but thinks in
absolutes: “right and wrong”- “like or dislike” - “love or
fear

Elephant – Strengths
(Subconscious)
• Is the power and the energy – the heavy lifter.
• Is the center of our emotions and the
storehouse of our memories.
• Cannot tell the difference between a real
experience or one which is imagined by the
Rider. (But, maybe not always.)

The Rider – Weaknesses
(Conscious)
• Is at the whim of the Elephant and can serve only as
a kind of “advisor.”
• Has a natural tendency to see mostly the negative
and over-analyze (analysis paralysis).
• Has limited reserves of mental energy. Will-power
and decision-making can sap its resources.

Rider – Strengths
(Conscious)
• Can look into the future and visualize alternate paths of
choice and – make a plan.
• Is a master storyteller The Rider loves to make up and
tell stories, even if many of the stories are a complete
confabulation and often a rationalization.
• Can influence but not control the Elephant with vivid,
emotionally charged pictures and images.
