Milind Deora • Member of Parliament- South Mumbai • Minister of State- Ministry of Communications & IT • Minister of State- Ministry of Shipping Youth Centric Initiatives • Job Fairs • Vocational Training Programs • Computer Literacy Programs • Cricket & Football Talent Hunts • Youth Parliament The Youth Parliament Concept: • Experience a day in Lok Sabha • Discuss and debate various local, national and international issues and then make suitable laws on them The Youth Parliament Objectives: • To develop in students an insight into the working of parliament • To make students consider public issues and form opinions on them • To develop in students the ability to arrive at a collective decision after discussion The Youth Parliament On Parliament Day: • Short Discussion- process where elected representatives raise important matters with Ministers in government • Matters of Public Importance- an “open house” for raising issues that are extremely urgent and deserve the government’s attention • Legislative Business- Debate and discussion over a particular legislative bill • Private Members’ Bill- open forum for individual members to put forth bills The Youth Parliament Selection of Participants- What kind of students are we looking for? • Students who are well informed and who have fairly good knowledge of our country's social, economic and political problems • Students who hold positions of merit in their classes • Students who have leadership qualities, are interested in extracurricular activities and can add value to this event • Students will have to submit short write up on prescribed topics 7 The Youth Parliament Application Process Choose any ONE of the following topics and send a write-up of one paragraph (upto 150 words) and mail it to mdi.youthparliament@gmail.com in PDF format ( eg.nishantarora.pdf) latest by 31st July 2013. 1) Citizen’s responsibility towards better governance in your country. 2) How can your Member of Parliament contribute more towards his Constituency? 3) How can youth power be utilised optimally? The Youth Parliament Conclusion • Based on their performance in the YP, students will be selected for a visit to the Parliament during the Winter Session, 2013 • Experience firsthand debates, policy-making from the galleries in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha • Engage with the Speaker of the House, important politicians, leaders and Union Ministers • Get a personalized tour of the Parliament, the Parliament Museum etc. by a bureaucrat
