bike race in the world

The Grand Départ
Yorkshire 2014
• The Grand Depart in
2014 takes places in
Yorkshire, on the 5th
and 6th of July
• This is the opening stage
of the Tour de France
and takes place in a
different nearby country
each year before the 23
day Tour de France starts
Illuminating
the route
• Thousands of people go
to France every year to
watch the race from the
side lines.
• Some of these people
make banners & signs to
cheer on the cyclists
• Some make creative
sculptures that can be
seen from the air

Challenge from
Sir Bradley Wiggins
“As you know, the Tour de France is
starting with the Grand Depart in
Yorkshire in 2014, and I think it would be
great if we could have some creative
artwork along the route, just like they do
in France. You saw the Farmers moving
bike from 2011 didn’t you?
I think it would be a great idea to use
people, and see what words we can
spell out, and to see what pictures we
can make! I look forward to seeing what
you can do, and hopefully see you lining
the route in 2014!”
People and shapes
What shapes can we make
with our bodies when lying down on the floor?
Activity 2: Planning art with people
Draw stick men over the words on your activity sheets
to plan out how you would create words that could be
seen from above using people
Activity 2: Illuminating the route
How would you create the words below using the people to spell out the letters?
1. Draw people over the letters below.
2. Write down next to the word how many people this word has used.
