Katan Sharee
USE OF KATAN SHAREE
Sharee is mostly associated with the culture and tradition
of Bangladeshi women.
Most of the women ware sharee occasionally or regularly.
Occasional users use sharee for Pohela Boisakh or Pohela
Falgun or Valentines Day or Weeding Ceremoney.
Women mainly use katan sharee for weeding ceremony.
From higher class to lower class people use Katan Sharee.
HISTORY OF KATAN SARI
Katan Sharee is mainly a type of Benarosi. The raw
materials (mainly a kind of Silk) of Katan come from
China. Some experts of Benaros came at Bangladesh and
from 1947 they started to produce Katan Sharee. After
1971, it’s demand increased drastically and many experts
join with them and they established Benarosi polli at
Mirpur-10, Dhaka.
Though Benarosi is the basic of Katan Sharee, only
Bangladesh produce Katan Sharee.

What is GI Act?
 A Geographical Indication is a name or sign used
on certain products which corresponds to a specific
geographical location ( town, region, or country).
The use of GI may act as a certification that the
product possesses certain quality, is made
according to traditional method or enjoys a certain
reputation, due to its geographical origin.
 Geographical Indication are traditional products,
produced by rural communities over generations
that have gained a reputation on the markets for
their specific products.
What is GI Act?
“TRIPS” :Trade Related Aspects of
Intellectual Property Right- Were included,
governments of all WTO member (155
Countries as of 10 May 2012) had agreed
to set certain basic standards for the
protection of GIs in all member countries.
Why GI Act is Needed for Bangladesh?
For sometimes now, we have seen that three items
which are very dear to every Bangladeshi have
been registered by India as its own products. They
are the famous –
 Jamdani sharee,
 The exquisite Nakshi Kantha
 Delicious Fazli mango.
Why GI Act is Needed for Bangladesh?
We have to move fast in our effort to prevent
some other country from listing our unique
products and calling them their own. Any
affirmative action by our government in such
matters will therefore be welcome.
Coleridge had once said: "Silence does not
always mark wisdom." We must heed his advice
in this case.”

 But prevention is better than cure.

register Katan Sharee in our GI products before its too late.
We hope that the government will register all the products
that have been presenting here as GI products.
