A. IMPERIALISM – WHAT IS IT?
• Imperialism is the domination by one (stronger) country of the
political, economic, and social life of another country or region.
• There are four distinct forms of Imperialism:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Colonies
Protectorates
Spheres of Influence
Economic Imperialism
I. COLONIES
• A colony is a country or territory governed internally by a foreign
power.
• There are two types of colonies: direct and indirect.
• The French practiced direct control, meaning they sent
officials and soldiers from France to control their colonies.
• The British practiced indirect control. They used local rulers
to govern their colonies. In addition, they encouraged
children of local rulers to get an education in England. This
way they could create a future generation of leaders to
continue ruling the colony.
II. PROTECTORATES
• A protectorate is a form of imperial rule in which local
rulers were left in place, but were expected to follow
the advice of foreign advisers.
• This system was beneficial because it cost little to run
and did not require large military forces.
III. SPHERES OF INFLUENCE
• Areas where an outside power claims
exclusive investment or trading
privileges.
• While these privileges were expected
to be honored by local officials, a
sphere of influence did not require any
military force or coercion.
IV. ECONOMIC IMPERIALISM
• An independent but less-
developed country controlled by
private business interests rather
than governments.
B. WHERE DID IMPERIALISM OCCUR?
• Imperialism occurred throughout the world.
• It was dictated (controlled) by the major western powers of
the time including Great Britain and the United States.
• By the end of the 19th century, these countries would have
some form of Imperial presence in countries throughout
Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.
