Writing a body paragraph on
‘Justice’
TO BE ABLE TO USE A PROMPT TO GUIDE
YOUR DISCUSSION OF THE BIG IDEAS
RELATING TO ‘JUSTICE’.
Practice prompt:
 ‘Without justice a society cannot function properly.’
Break it down and brainstorm ideas from your
texts
 Underline key words
 Consider the prompt from a range of perspectives
 Brainstorm how specific ideas from ‘TKMB’ and your
secondary text(s) could inform your discussion of the
prompt.
‘Without justice a society cannot function properly.’
 What are some general ideas that spark from this
PROMPT?
What does it mean for a society to not
function properly? What would this look
like?
What things
prevent justice from occurring?
What happens in a society that does not
have a justice system, or where other
injustices such as discrimination occur?
BIG IDEAS that come from this initial
brainstorm
These could then be used as our topic sentences for each
body paragraph.
Eg1. A society cannot function properly when the legal
system governing it is corrupt.
Eg2. Chaos can result from justice not being served.
Use your texts to help you come up with these.
Think about what the examples from your texts
show you about the PROMPT.
Your body paragraphs must:
 Be centred around a BIG IDEA that relates to the
prompt.
 Contain some general discussion about Justice.
 Refer to some examples from a text or texts.
 Refer to a quote(s) from a text.
Your body paragraph could:
 Focus on a discussion of how one text demonstrates
something about the prompt and the general nature
of justice.
 Compare texts (TKMB and your secondary text) and
how they demonstrate something similar or different
about a BIG IDEA that you’ve
drawn from the prompt.
TEEL still applies here!
 Start with a topic sentence which should be centred around
the BIG IDEA you’ve drawn from the PROMPT.
 An example might be:
A society cannot function properly when the legal
system governing it is corrupt.
In this example you could then go on to discuss how in
‘TKMB’ because many members of the society and therefore
the jury were racially prejudiced Tom Robinson could not get
a fair trial. This prevented justice from being achieved as he
was found guilty when he was in fact innocent.
How does this decision in the court later lead to a further
injustice for Tom?
Your turn:
 Come up with an example from your secondary text that
illustrates this BIG IDEA and see if you can compare it with
what happens in ‘TKMB”.
 Start your body paragraph with the topic sentence
from the last slide: A society cannot function properly
when the legal system governing it is corrupt.
 If you don’t have an appropriate example from your secondary
text just practise writing a paragraph about how ‘TKMB’
illustrates the topic sentence above. Discuss Tom Robinson
but also Atticus in this paragraph.
