Moving the Body Objective: SWBAT explain how the body moves WARM UP: 1. Write the definition of the muscular system in your notebook. (Look up the definition in the back of the yellow textbook) Muscular System • The muscles of the body that, together with the skeletal system, functions to produce movement • Gives us strength Remind me… • What is the function of the SKELETAL SYSTEM? • What do we call the place where two or more bones meet? Joints • Immovable (fixed) joints: joint that does not move Example: joints in between the bones of your skull • Movable Joints: joints that move Example: finger joints Movement • Can your bones move on their own? Connective Tissues • Tendons: connect MUSCLES to BONES • Ligaments: Connect BONES to BONES • Cartilage: Strong and flexible connective tissue that covers the ends of bones at a joint. It also gives shape and support to other parts of the body, like ears, nose and the windpipe. Supporting the Support System! • What is the function of the MUSCULAR SYSTEM? • What different types of muscles? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6u0u_59 UDc Are All Muscles the Same? • Three types: Cardiac, Smooth, and Skeletal Foldable: 1. 2. 3. 4. Tear out a piece of notebook paper Fold “hamburger” style, cut down the fold Cut one paper so that it forms 2 flaps Cut the other paper so that it forms 3 flaps Foldable • Tape or glue the flap on your notebook • Label the two flaps Involuntary Muscles Voluntary Muscles Tape Muscle Notes! • Muscles are divided into two main categories Involuntary: Muscles that can contract without you actively making them Example: pupils in your eye Muscle Notes! • Voluntary: muscles that contract when you make them do so Example: skeletal muscles Foldable • Tape or glue the other flap on your page or back of page Tape • Label the three flaps Cardiac Muscle Smooth Muscle Skeletal Muscle Three types of Muscles • Cardiac Muscle: -found only in the heart -makes the heart beat • Would this be a voluntary or involuntary muscle???? Three types of Muscles • Smooth Muscle: -not banded, it’s smooth -inside many organs like the stomach -mostly involuntary Three types of Muscles • Skeletal Muscle: - “striated” or banded -attaches to bones -moves bones • Would this be a voluntary or involuntary muscle???? Add Drawings • Page B 24 and B 25 in big yellow textbook • DRAW cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle next to the definitions in your foldable
