This strategy is like driving a car.
When everything is going smoothly, the
car is clicking (Pearson, p. 393). You’re
getting to your destination.
 When the car hits a pothole, gets
stuck in the mud or comes to a big
seed bump, then the car is in a clunking
phase. Obstacles are hindering you.

Click and Clunk is a useful way to motivate
students to become involved in monitoring for
meaning (Pearson, p. 393).
Clicks are portions of the text that are easy
to understand.
 Clunks are problem portions, which can be
hard words or confusing sentences.
Students use metacognition to try to correct
their own reading errors.
STRATEGIES TO USE
When student hits a clunk, they attempt
to clarify.
Strategies for dealing with clunks might
be listed on a chart in the classroom or on
a bookmark.
If students are unable to resolve a clunk,
they can place a sticky note next to the
confusing element then get help later.
