Palasari Church Aileen/6A Gereja Palasari, Bali. Enculturation • In catholic church all over the world there are different kind of enculturation. People use their own picture about Catholic in their own country. There are different kinds of enculturation base on their local culture to influence the religion. History • Palasari church became a symbol of inculturation of the Catholic religion and culture in the region Jembrana, western part of Bali. In 1940’s Father Simon Buis built a place named Palasari and formed a community named “Model Dorf” which has Catholic religion but in Balinese culture. It was inaugurated in 15 September 1940. Father Simon Buis go to Bali as a missionary or a Catholic priest in 1936. Nine years before the proclamation of the independence of Indonesia, August 17, 1945. He relate Catholic to Balinese cultures. The beauty of the church interact other tourist. History • This church has Balinese gothic architecture. In the entrance there are some statues that are in Balinese style and there are some Balinese carving. • The interior of the church starts with statue, tabernacle, altar and crucifix. There are 14 carvings of the Cross, all touched in Balinese style. There are the statue Jesus and Virgin Mary in the right and left. In the right and left side also placed 2 umbrellas in each side also known as “Tedung” which is often use in Bali. Gereja Palasari • It is one of an enculturation because it is a catholic tradition but it is used in Balinese style to fit to Balinese people. • It has Balinese architecture and sometimes when they have special occasion they use traditional clothes. They’re architecture is like temples in Hindunese. When there is special ocassion there are some Balinese performances and also use traditional musical instrument. Purpose of Enculturation • The architecture of this church is Balinese which has also Balinese decorations. They use Balinese architecture because so that that people in Bali can understand the religion, to spread the religion in Bali and also they already fit in the architecture. Influence of enculturation It has quite similar structure of the building Influence of enculturation In special occasion there is Balinese traditional dance. They use the traditional dances in the liturgy Influence of enculturation The clothes in the mass and Balinese tradition al clothes is the same. Conclusion • I think catholic enculturation is important to s the match with the local people to catholic religion and share tradition among each other.
