Topeng is one of the most old and popular style of the Balinese theatre. Its performance celebrates, between myth and history, the epos of old courts, providing as well an hilarious entertainment for everybody. The story of King Bedahulu narrates the events of the mythologized Javanese conquest of Bali in the fourteenth century, namely how an ascetic king found himself with the head of a pig. https://vimeo.com/78905878 Sidha Karya: the divine stranger "Sidha Karya", means literally "who has the power to fulfill the work (the rite)", his appearence is necessary for the proper achievement of each ceremonial Topeng. His vigorous and wild dance raises the hilarious amazement of onlookers and the attention of the demons, thus allowing the high priest (who works in Balinese temple very closed) to carry out undisturbed his ritual prayer to sanctify the water. The story of the birth of this mask reveals a conflict nowadays still very current: the relationship with the stranger. Clear its moral warning: people cannot live happy and at peace, if dispels the stranger as an enemy. A community that fails to incorporate positively what appears potentially destructive, is vulnerable.
