HOW TO WRITE A CASE STUDY
CASE STUDY
It’s a different style of learning!
 Need to keep an open mind…think outside the
box
 Brings business problems to reality – not
remembering definitions
 Most college/university uses cases (some more
than others e.g. Ivey)

DISCLAIMER
Lesson I’m teaching today is what I AM looking
for!
 Each professor will have their own style on how
to write a proper case
 Each subject (e.g. finance, marketing) will have a
different style to write the case

STEP 1: PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
Identify the who the decision maker is
 Identify the problem.

LENGTH = Few sentences! Don’t give me
paragraph long answers.
CASE TODAY….
Decision Maker
In this case, the decision maker is Rohit Narang. He is a
computer programmer who has just recently joined
Apex Computers.
Problem Statement
Rohit joined Apex with expectations of a thriving and
encouraging environment. He learns quickly that his
team is unmotivated, and his boss plays a dictator
role. Rohit needs to decide what to do in the short term
and long term to keep himself and his teammates
happy
STEP 2: SITUATION ANALYSIS
Provide the Analysis of the Situation
 Communication Process
Efficient
 Effective
 Barriers to effective communication?


Conflict
Good…Bad?
 Cause of Conflict


Motivation

Why aren’t employees motivated? (Maslow, ERG
Theory)
LENGTH = 1.5 PAGES
CASE TODAY…
Analysis
Communication Process
 Lots of emails
 Barely any communication between boss employees
 Top – Down approach
Conflict
 Dysfunctional conflict…rooted in managerial style
 Possible unresolved conflict in past (ie. Suresh Comments)
 Role Ambiguities…no direction from boss
Motivation
 Expectancy Theory – M= ExIxV…Employees do not expect to good
performance = good reward.
 What is the reward? Do people value it? Apparently Rohit is getting
paid amazing!
 Maslow – Employees don’t have Self- Esteem, Self Actualization
STEP 3: RECOMMENDATION/ACTION PLAN
Short Term Recommendation
 What the decision maker do in the short term to put a
band-aid on this problem?
 Time Frame – Next day to end of month
Long Term Recommendation
 What do we do for the upcoming months?
 Can there be a change in compensation
 How do we sustain this?

Improving Communication
Doesn’t have to be from the text book! Be creative!!!!
Length – 1 page
IMPORTANT NOTE: I WANT DETAILED ACTION PLANS
EXAMPLE OF BAD ACTION PLAN
Bad Plan…
I plan to improve communication….
 I plan to listen better…
 I plan to be a better employee

HOW?!

 Speak to Co – Workers tomorrow, and find root cause
of problem
