It is a problem-solving process; a time for trying one’s self in the role of a teacher. • The self-knowledge and technical skills acquired during student teaching should provide the prologue for a career-long process of professional development. Philosophy of Student Teaching Candidate Cooperating Teacher University Supervisor Successful Student Teaching Philosophy of Student Teaching • Frequent and honest communication between the three partners is critical to the success of the experience. • Hope to provide context to develop, practice, and continually upgrade a personal repertoire of teaching skills. Cooperating Teacher’s Responsibilities • Provide orientation to Candidate (student teacher). • Complete & submit “Cooperating Teacher Payroll Form” to Brown Hall (NWMSU) if applicable. • Maintain weekly contact with University Supervisor. Cooperating Teacher’s Responsibilities • Provide a supportive atmosphere. • Give Candidate increasing opportunities to assist with instruction as soon as appropriate. • Candidate is required to teach at least five consecutive lessons to complete a Teacher Work Sample (TWS). • Keep notes on observations. Cooperating Teacher’s Responsibilities • Talk frequently (at least weekly) with Candidate about observations and give specific suggestions. • Approve lesson plans developed by Candidate or plan jointly with Candidate. • NWMSU encourages the use of the Co-Teaching Model for Student Teaching. Cooperating Teacher’s Responsibilities • Formally evaluate the candidate’s performance twice during the placement. • Formative evaluation – around middle of placement. • Summative evaluation – during last two weeks of placement. • Conference with candidate after each evaluation. Cooperating Teacher’s Responsibilities • If needed, complete a Professional Improvement Plan jointly with candidate. • Conference with University Supervisor to discuss the Summative Evaluation and the final grade. • Complete a disposition form after the end of the placement. Cooperating Teacher’s Responsibilities • Submit required paperwork through the University’s on-line data collection system TK20. • Additional information and forms can be found on NWMSU’s Student Teaching website. (http://www.nwmissouri.edu/dept/peu/studentteach/in dex.htm) University Supervisor’s Responsibilities • Act as the liaison between the University and the Cooperating Teacher/School. • Conduct orientation meeting with Candidate and Cooperating Teacher. • Maintain weekly contact with Cooperating Teacher. • Provide support and counsel for Candidate. University Supervisor’s Responsibilities • Work with Candidate and Cooperating Teacher to observe, consult, discuss and suggest. • Respond to reported problems. • Act as resource on Co-teaching Model. • Provide guidance & support for Candidates on Teacher Work Sample (TWS). University Supervisor’s Responsibilities • Conduct two formative evaluations during each placement. • Complete one summative evaluation at the end of each placement. • Conference with candidate after each evaluation. University Supervisor’s Responsibilities • If needed, complete a Professional Improvement Plan jointly with candidate. • Conference with University Supervisor to discuss the Summative Evaluation and final grade. • Complete a disposition form after the end of the placement. University Supervisor’s Responsibilities • Submit required paperwork through the University’s on-line data collection system TK20. • No longer required to submit “Visitation Report.” • Contact Director of Field Experience as needed. • Additional information and forms can be found on the student teaching website. (http://www.nwmissouri.edu/dept/peu/studentteach/index.htm) Teacher Candidate’s Responsibilities • Demonstrate positive professional behavior, including • respect for confidential information, • appropriate dress, • promptness and attendance, • respect for professional educators, & • adherence to specified timelines. Teacher Candidate’s Responsibilities • Take advantage of opportunities to observe Cooperating Teacher and other professionals. • Maintain frequent communication with Cooperating Teacher and University Supervisor. • Be available for conferences with Cooperating Teacher and University Supervisor. Teacher Candidate’s Responsibilities • Complete requirements for Background Check prior to student teaching. • Forward results to 200 Brown Hall. • Submit required paperwork through TK20. • “5-day Report” (submit within first week). • “Demographic Verification Form.” • “Special Education Verification” (if applicable). • “Summative Reflection” (end of student teaching). • “Dispositions” (end of student teaching). Teacher Candidate’s Responsibilities • Attend mandatory meetings on campus. • September 21 (Campus Seminars). • October 19 (Campus Seminars). • November 9 (TWS Day). • Check University e-mail at least twice a week. Teacher Candidate’s Responsibilities • Take advantage of all opportunities to assist with instruction as soon as appropriate. • Candidate is required to teach at least five consecutive lessons to complete a Teacher Work Sample (TWS). • Prepare lesson plans for each teaching activity and get approval from Cooperating Teacher or plan jointly with Cooperating Teacher. • NWMSU encourages the use of the Co-Teaching Model for Student Teaching. Teacher Candidate’s Responsibilities • Arrange with University Supervisor to conduct two formative observations and one summative evaluation during each placement. • Provide required lesson plan and materials for each observation. • Conference with University Supervisor after each observation. Teacher Candidate’s Responsibilities • Meet with Cooperating Teacher & University Supervisor individually to review Summative Evaluation. • If appropriate, work with University Supervisor or Cooperating Teacher to write Professional Improvement Plan. Teacher Candidate’s Responsibilities • Complete & submit “Teacher Work Sample.” • Information available on Student Teaching website. • University Supervisor available as resource.
