One of the main principles of the Co-Teaching Model is that the Teacher Candidate is to “hit the ground running” from the very beginning of their student teaching experience. So, please allow the Candidate to start playing a teaching role as soon as they start. 15 Frequently Asked Questions What kind of lesson plans should I expect? UCM does not require any one lesson plan model but, rather, allows the format to be determined by the school district, building, and the Cooperating Teacher. 16 Frequently Asked Questions Is it reasonable to expect my Teacher Candidate to do everything that I do? Yes, as long as it is a part of your regular duties. Candidates are excused from duties for which you receive an extra stipend. 17 Frequently Asked Questions What is the biggest problem in working with a Teacher Candidate? Lack of communication, especially a lack of honest communication. Open and honest communication from the Cooperating Teacher is a must. Take care of issues while they are still small issues. What do I do if things are not going well? Contact the University Supervisor immediately. 18 Frequently Asked Questions May the Teacher Candidate be used as a substitute teacher? We ask that you NOT do this. In an emergency, we ask that the Candidate stay with their regular class and that you cover the class that needs the substitute. Will the University Supervisor make unannounced visits? No. Observations and conferences are scheduled well in advance so everyone can plan accordingly. 19 Frequently Asked Questions How am I to communicate with the University Supervisor? The University Supervisor will give you their phone number and email address. 20 Frequently Asked Questions Are there required forms that I will be expected to complete? Yes. Go to www.ucmo.edu/cert/student Once on the Student Teaching Homepage, click on “Forms” at the bottom of the black box on the left side of the page. Scroll down to Student Teaching Partners and click on Documents for District Supervisors. 21 Frequently Asked Questions Are there required forms that I will be expected to complete? (continued) It is important to complete and submit the Supervising Teacher Information Form as soon as possible so that we have a double-check on contact information, etc. This form also lets us know if you wish to receive a stipend for your supervision. 22 Frequently Asked Questions Am I responsible for issuing the Candidate’s grade? No. You will complete a Summative Evaluation of the Candidate, then go over it with them with both of you signing it. The University Supervisor may ask what grade you believe the Candidate should receive, but it is their responsibility to assign grades. 23 Stipend/No Stipend As a Cooperating Teacher, you have two choices for compensation: Stipend: $125 for a full semester of supervision or $93.75 if you have the 12-week assignment or $31.25 if you have the 4-week assignment in a split placement. No Stipend: May be a more practical choice for some districts with Career Ladder Plans. 24 Questions? Ask the University Supervisor Or Contact Dr. Rich Cole at: rlcole@ucmo.edu 25
