Let’s Get Started!
5 easy steps to GROW YOUR SALE
1. Plan your program and Set Goals
2. Motivate your Scouts with INCENTIVES!
3. Build your best Popcorn Kickoff ever!
4. Constantly Communicate with Scouts and parents
5. Use the best ways to Sell and achieve your goal!
#1 Plan Your Program
Go to page 21 of your IYOS Book or
the Virtual Sale Planner at sell.trails-end.com
• Build your plan using the Budget Planner
1. Plan
2. Budget
3. Set Goals
•
On the Virtual Sale Planner, you can fill in your number of
boys, commission and activities per month with costs.
•
The planner does the rest!
#1 Plan Your Program
Crucially important for your Unit to
have a Successful Sale. Scouting
should be FUN and EXCITING, with
lots of activities, camp, etc.
It’s Camping
It’s Activities
It’s Advancement
It’s Equipment
It’s what they want to do!
#1 Plan Your Program
IDEAL YEAR OF SCOUTING
•
•
•
•
•
•
Pack holds a “Brainstorming session” with their Scouts AND parents are given
a survey to find out what the boys “want” to do.
Pack Committee should whittle down the ideas from the brainstorming
session – to discard ideas that aren’t feasible.
Build a complete list of exciting program ideas to present to youth and
Scouting families at next Pack Meeting.
At next Pack Meeting, boys are given stickers (1st, 2nd, 3rd) to place next to, or
vote for, their favorite program ideas.
Pack Committee finalizes their Program, based on results of their youth vote
/ parent surveys.
A complete Pack Budget is determined, based on new Program, equipment,
etc. costs and then shared with parents.
#1 Plan Your Program
IF Units do the IDEAL YEAR OF SCOUTING correctly, they will:
•
•
•
•
Retain more of their members AND attract more new members
Send more Scouts to all the different camping opportunities
Train more volunteer leaders / have more parental support
Spend less time fundraising and more time having FUN in a
robust Scouting Program
• Fundraise less often, but more efficiently and even increase FOS
• Enjoy a full, fresh, and exciting Scouting Program – and have it be
FREE to their Scouting families!

#2 Motivate Your Scouts
•
Build your own unit-level incentives
• Pie in the Face for $600 Sellers!
• Top Seller Prizes!
• Top-selling Den – Pizza Party!
•
College Scholarship
•
Sell $2,500 once and 6% of
your total sales each year is
invested in your own college
scholarship account
#2 Motivate Your Scouts
•
•
•
•
The focus for a Blitz weekend is for
your Unit or Den to go into their
designated neighborhood as a group
and visit every house.
There will be two Blitz Weekends this
year - Sept. 20-21 and Oct. 11-12.
On these weekends, Scouts will focus on “Take Orders”
and will go to as many houses as possible.
Scouts who participate in a Blitz Weekend will earn the
BLITZ DAY PATCH.

#3 Build the
BEST Popcorn Kickoff!
The kickoff is the single most important factor for
you to have a good sale
Have a 30-minute fun-filled Popcorn Kickoff:
• Make it FUN and FESTIVE!
• Show parents what’s in it for them
• Have giveaways and prizes
• Prepare your Scouts
• Have role plays and practice the sales script
• Help your Scouts gain the confidence to sell!
#3 Build the
BEST Popcorn Kickoff!
Kickoff Tools for You
• Refer to pages 6 in the Popcorn Sale Guidebook
• Customize the Kickoff Presentation in the Virtual Sale Planner
• Training videos from trails-end.com
• Invest a little in your kickoff to reap huge rewards with your sale!
#3 Build the
BEST Popcorn Kickoff!
Want to close sales?
Try this approach at the door……
Hi, my name is _____ and I’m a C/B scout w/ P/T # ___.
I’m selling popcorn so I can ______.
(go to camp / pay for my scouting program / earn a scholarship)
I have a goal of $____.
You can help me reach my goal by trying some of my popcorn!
Will you help me?
More effective than asking, “Want to buy some popcorn?” don’t you think?
#4 Communicate
with your Families
It’s important to follow up after your kickoff and
throughout the sale with important sale information.
Use email, social media, and meetings to remind families about:
•
•
•
•
Sales goal for each Scout
Key sale dates
Scout rewards available
Online selling
Go to trails-end.com to access communication tools:

Take Order
Scouts use an order form (in the family guide)
to go door-to-door or sell to family and friends.
•
Establish your dates – take order sales typically start immediately after kickoff.
•
Determine sales territory
•
Create a “Blitz Day” to have Dens sell as a
group activity
•
Have parent(s) take an order form to work
REMEMBER!
Two out of three people will buy when asked,
but less than 20% of households have been
contacted.
Show N Sell
Make arrangements for Scouts to set up in front of stores to sell.
•
Ask store manager for permission several weeks in advance
•
Assign Scouts (2-3) and parents in two hour blocks
•
DO NOT open up microwave boxes
•
Divide sales equally among Scouts who participate
•
Use leftover product to fulfill take order needs
•
Apply donations received towards your military sales
Show N Sell

participated in Show &

More Tips for Success:
•
Do not use a table or chairs. Tables are barriers between you and the
consumer.
•
Hand out flyers that tell people about your Unit and what activities you do,
how you help the community, etc.
•
Tape pieces of paper to each product that has a phone number / email so
they can buy more when they run out
•
DON’T ask for donations! People will give those to you anyway, and
asking for them will decrease your sales
•
Stack boxes to display product. Hang up posters/pictures of your boys
doing Scouting activities and helping the community.
Display not blocking doorway and area is kept clean

Online Selling
Scouts sell to far-away friends and family Trail’s End ships the
product directly to the consumer.
•
Everyone needs to create a new account to view and sell online at
sell.trails-end.com
•
Online sales COUNT toward Scout Rewards!
(starting August
1 through your council’s fall sale end date)
•
Get 100% of your Scouts to create an account
and send 10 emails to family and friends
•
The average online order is $48
How to Use the Order System
The “Popcorn System” is very simple to use:
• You will be supplied with a username and password to get in for the first
time. A confirmation email will verify your email address as valid.
• Once in, you’ll be at your Unit’s “Homepage” and can then enter your
Unit’s popcorn order from the “Orders” menu along the top.
• Follow the same process for ordering your Unit’s prizes.
• You will receive confirmation emails whenever you submit an order
• The system has more functionality if you want to use it – such as
tracking sales, goals and prizes by individual Scout and printing packing
slips that shows how much each Scout is to receive, etc.
Login to the “Popcorn System”
You will be supplied with your “username” (email
address) and “password” by the council.
Your Unit’s “Homepage”
From your Unit’s “Homepage” you can click on
the triangle next to “Orders” menu along the
top (or on the word, “Orders” itself) to place
your product and prize orders when ready.
The “Scouts” menu option allows you to manage
Scouts, goals, sales by Scout (if you want)
Placing your Unit’s Popcorn Orders
Enter the quantity you need for each product in brightly colored column (by
container). System will change it to cases + containers for you. Hit “Submit to
Council” button at bottom.
