Calculate the density for the following objects: A ball with a volume of 10cm³ and a mass of 30g A backpack with a volume of 200cm³ and a mass of 400g A soda with a volume of 100mL and a mass of 100g A safe with a volume of 1m³ and a mass of 2kg DO NOW To figure the density of liquid, you use the same formula Mass/volume = Density You first measure the mass of an empty graduated cylinder Then, you pour in the liquid and measure its volume Next, you find the mass of the graduated cylinder with the liquid inside Subtract the mass of the graduated cylinder from the mass of both to find the mass of the liquid Liquid Density Each table needs: 1 Small Graduated Cylinder (smallie) 1 Large Graduated Cylinder (tallie) 1 Triple Beam Balance Goggles for each student Paper and pencil to record results Liquid Density Lab Everyone must wear their goggles at ALL times! Do not play with the liquids – no drinking spilling, tasting, etc. Do not waste the liquids – only use the correct amount Any student who is not following the rules will not participate and receive a 0 for the lab Liquid Density Lab Step 1 – Measure the mass of your small graduated cylinder Step 2 – Pour 20mL of syrup into your small graduated cylinder Step 3 – Measure the mass of the syrup Step 4 – Subtract the mass of the graduated cylinder alone from the mass of the syrup – this gives you the mass of the syrup alone Step 5 – Slowly pour the syrup into the large graduated cylinder Repeat steps 2-5 with the dish soap, shampoo, water, and oil (in this order!) Step 6 – Find the density of each liquid Liquid Density Lab When finished, wash out your graduated cylinders and return all materials to their proper places Wash your hands! Liquid Density Lab Why do you think the liquids made layers? How is density related? Liquid Density Lab Liquids that have a lower density will “float” on liquids that have a higher density The same is true for solids – if the solid has a lower density than the liquid it’s in – it will float! Liquid Density Page 55 On scratch paper, answer at least questions 1-16 Chapter Review For the listening competition, someone reads an essay You take notes Then you answer the questions about what you heard Selection test will be Tuesday after school Sign-up sheet will be on my door UIL Listening Have a great weekend!
