theme
• If you try really hard, you accomplish what
you set out to do.
• This is a good theme for middle school kids
because it shows them that they can
accomplish anything in school.

imagery
Ex. “One day a high summer flood washed him
out of the burrow …and carried him, kicking and
clucking down a roadside ditch. He found a
little wisp of grass floating there, and clung to it
till he lost his senses.
There is a lot of detail and description that helps
you picture Rikki in your head.

Figurative language
“He could fluff up his tail until it looked a bottlebrush.’’
Kipling uses similes like this one all through the
story. We can just imagine what Rikki looks like
when he is ready to fight.

Word choice
• “She [Nagaina] had crept up behind him as he
was talking, to make an end of him; and he
heard her savage hiss as the stroke missed.”
Kipling selects words that show how Nagaina is
scary, sneaky, and evil.
