What is Rugby ?
 A competitive outdoor contact sport, played with an oval
ball, by two teams of 15 players.
 A rugby game consist of two 40 min halves
 Rugby is also referred to as rugby union
History
 The origin of rugby is reputed to be an incident when William
Webb-Ellis picked up a soccer ball, during a game of football in
1823 and ran with it, at Rugby School, Rugby, England. Although
this tale is likely to be apocryphal, the trophy played for every four
years at the Rugby World Cup is named after him.
 The code was originally known simply as "rugby football"; it was
not until after a schism in 1895, which resulted in the separate
code of rugby league, that the name "rugby union" came to be
used for the game itself

 Rugby union was famously an amateur sport until the
IRB declared the game open in 1995, removing
restrictions on payments to players.
 Rugby union has established itself as a popular sport for
both spectators and participants, particularly in Australia,
Argentina, England, France, Georgia, Ireland, Italy,
Japan, Madagascar, Bermuda, New Zealand, Cook
Islands, Romania, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales.
Positions
 A rugby union team is made up of 15 players: eight forwards, numbered from 1









to 8; and seven backs, numbered from 9 to 15. Depending upon the
competition, there may be up to seven replacements.
1 is known as the loose prop
2 is known as the hooker
3 is known as the tight head prop
4 is known as the lock
5 is known as the lock
6 is the blindside flanker
7 is the open side flanker
8 is commonly referred to as the eight man or number eight
9 is scrum half

Women’s Rugby
 Women's International Rugby started in 1982. Over six hundred women's internationals
have been played by over forty different nations. As well as the women's World Cup
event ,which takes place every four years, there are also other regular tournaments,
including a Six Nations.
 The Women's Six Nations Championship is an international rugby union competition
contested between six European women's national teams.
 In 2007, the Six Nations committee adopted the tournament saw Italy Women
subsitituted for Spain Women and the title sponsorship of RBS included to produce a
parallel tournament with the men's competitions for the first time in Women's Rugby
history.
Non-Traditional Ways to Play
 Rugby sevens, in which there are only 7 players per side,
and each half is normally 7 minutes
 Touch Rugby, in which 'tackles' are made by simply
touching the ball carrier with two hands.
