Swinburne
 What is Smoke-free Swinburne?
From 12 August 2013 smoking will be prohibited anywhere across all Australian
campuses including outdoor areas in and around each campus.
 Why are we doing it?
The purpose of a smoke-free Swinburne is to improve the health and wellbeing of
all staff, students and visitors and to protect them from exposure to Environmental
Tobacco Smoke (ETS), creating a healthy environment for all to enjoy.
 Who’s been engaged?
In making the decision on how and when to implement this policy, Swinburne has
engaged representatives of staff, students (international and local), residents,
traders and the Union.

 When will this policy be implemented?
Smoke-free Swinburne comes into effect from 12 August.
 How will this be communicated?
The implementation of a smoke-free Swinburne is an important initiative and
Swinburne is using a variety of media to communicate this message.
Communications announcing this initiative will be sent to all Australian employees
and students from the Vice-Chancellor. Posters announcing the change will be
displayed in all buildings and new signage will be posted around campus
perimeters.
 How will the policy be enforced?
One of the aims of introducing a smoke-free policy is to raise awareness of the
harmful effects of ETS on others. Through education and building awareness of
the harmful impacts on others we aim to motivate smokers to protect those around
them by following the Smoke-free Policy. A person in breach of the policy will be
informed of the policy and will be asked to leave the premises until they have
finished smoking. Disciplinary action may be taken against repeat offenders.
