ICE QUOTE PRACTICE
“The Third Wish”
Learning Target

Form an ICE quote based on a given topic sentence
and specific quote.




I = Introduce Introduce the quote by giving background
information your reader needs to understand what is
going on in your quote
C=Cite Give credit to the author or show which
character is speaking, use the exact word-for-word
passage that you are using. Put quotes around the
passage. Put a page number in parenthesis (1) after
the quote.
E=Explain Explain why that quote supports your
opinion on the topic. How does that quote prove you
are right?
Remember…


The purpose of an ICE quote is to show your reader
why your position is right.
You should have stated your position in the topic
sentence.
ICE quote practice

On the following slide there will be a topic sentence
and a passage from the story. Your job is to use the
topic sentence and the passage to create an ICE
quote.
Example: ICE it!
 Mr.
White from “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs can
be described in the story as practical.
 Passage
from story: It seems to me I’ve got all I want. As
found on page 91
Mr. White from “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs can
be described as practical. In the story Herbert urges his
father to make a wish. Mr. White is reluctant to wish and
reflects, “It seems to me I’ve got all I want” (91). In other
words, Mr. White feels he should wish carefully since he is
content in the beginning and doesn’t want to rush into a wish.

Topic sentence: Mr. Peters from the story, “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken is
characterized as conflicted.
Passage from story: Now he understood that Leita was really a swan from the
forest, and this made him very sad because when a human being marries a bird
it always leads to sorrow. As found on page 104.
Directions: Rewrite the topic sentence and use the passage to write an ICE quote.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO FINISH THE PARAGRAPH. Just write the topic
sentence and ICE your quote. So, you probably are writing only 5 sentences.
Complete in Pages and send as a Word Document.
