QR CODES IN THE
CLASSROOM

QR CODES ARE EVERYWHERE
A QR (quick response) code is a
two dimension barcode. Because
it is two dimensional it can hold
much more information then a
regular barcode.
You need to use a camera to
“scan” the code and software (or
an app) to read the code. This is
easily achieved with the many
smart phones on the market.
Laptops, iPads, iPods, and even
desktop computers with an
attached camera can all read QR
codes.
A useful way of thinking of QR codes is that
they link the physical world (the poster, print
out, room, or physical object) to the
electronic (web resource, text information) or
facilitating communication (SMS message,
phone call).
Museums use
them to provide
audio tours to
patrons as they
walk around the
exhibits.
Korea has installed “virtual stores” at train
stations where commuters can scan there
choices using their phones, and the groceries
will be delivered to their home. (sign me up!)
QR BUSINESS CARDS
Moo minicards (100 for $19.99)
MANY BUSINESS USE THEM FOR
ADVERTISEMENTS/COUPONS
QR Codes
can link you
to a website.
QR Codes can link you to an
audio recording.
QR CODES CAN LINK YOU TO A
SOCIAL NETWORK
YOU CAN IMBED PLAIN TEXT IN THE QR
CODE (NO NEED FOR THE INTERNET!)
HOW CAN YOU USE THEM IN THE
CLASSROOM?
AUDIO RECORDINGS OF REFLECTIONS
This art teacher asked the
students to write a
reflection of a work of art.
The students then
recorded their reflection
in audioboo. This app
provided a web address
linked to the audio boo,
which the students used
in the qr code creation
website. Parent can
scan the code & listen to
their students
presentation. A great
addition to open house.
USE QR CODES TO REVIEW CONTENT
You can use codes to send students to review
videos, worksheets or audios. It can be used at the
top of a review sheet to check answers.
PROVIDE THE STUDENTS MULTIPLE CODES ON A SCAVENGER HUNT
REVIEW GAME. EACH CODE CAN LINK THEM TO A QUESTION (TEXT),
A WEB SITE, IMAGE, OR SOUND RECORDING.
INVOLVE YOUR CLASS, THE WHOLE
SCHOOL AND/OR THE COMMUNITY

BOOK REVIEWS
Create book trailers in iMovie (animoto etc…) post
it on the web (or save it in Dropbox, or Google
Drive) Make a QR code and put the code right in
the book so students can watch the book trailer
and be encouraged to read.
LINK PARENTS TO RESOURCES
Label things around the
room with codes (these
were made adorable
with square black paper
plates). Instead of
everyone standing in line
to speak with you, they
can circulate around the
room and scan things to
hear/read more
information about what is
going on in your room.

A PLETHORA OF OTHER IDEAS
•
Include a QR code at the top of work sheets that link to a voice
recording, pencast, or video of you modeling the process of the
homework
•
Attach a code at the top of a handout with a link to the standard you
are working on
•
Place a QR code outside your door with contact information, so a visitor
can contact you f
•
“Dump” QR codes around the school with lunch menu links, debate
topics, positive affirmations
•
Record science labs, store them somewhere you can link to, create a
code for each one, and place on the calendar on the date. Students
who need a review to write the lab, or were absent can scan and go!
•
Differentiate question with different codes (if the students are using an
ipad, they can blow up the font as well)
•
Use a code in areas that need troubleshooting (databases,
independent centers)
•
Conduct surveys easily
