The UK is made up of many
races, cultures and
RELIGIONS...
Before WW2 there
were few people who
followed a religion other
than Christianity...
WHY DID THIS
CHANGE?
The UK called upon
members of the
Commonwealth to help
rebuild Britain.
In the 60’s and 70’s
there was a large influx
of people from India,
Bangladesh and Pakistan.
This led to a growth in
Muslims, Hindus and
Sikhs.
It makes people think
more about religion and
their own beliefs.
Look at the sheet which has ten arguments on it.
It helps to stop religious
conflict and tension – e.g.
Islamaphobia

Grades C
You will be
able to
identify at
least three
advantages
of living in a
multi-faith
society.
It has not been easy for the UK
to become a multi-faith society.
There have been many instances
over the years of religious
tension and religious motivated
violence and hate crimes (like in
the starter activity).
INCLUSIVISM
AND
EXCLUSIVISM
Most
believers (and nonbelievers) in the UK accept that

some people

When believers from
different religions live
together in one place
there can be issues if
one religious group tries
to convert another.
Should
members of a
religious faith

Grade B
You will be
able to explain
why religious
conversion may
present issues
within a multifaith society.
Read the problem
opposite.
Highlight the
issues faced in
this letter on
your copy.
How might these
problems lead to
conflict and
tensions between
religions?
Dear Deirdre,
I'm a Christian guy who loves a
Muslim girl and we have been in a
relationship for about 3 years.
Everything was going smoothly
until we had a discussion about
marriage and future plans.
Secondly, the issue is how our kids
will be raised. Though she agreed
that she doesn't mind our kids being
raised Christian, she said she
wouldn't help me in doing so. I
personally feel that kids should be
nurtured under a single religion and
both the parents should actively
participate in this activity.
The problem is that I am sure her
parents would not agree to us
marrying. The only option is to get
secretly married and reveal it at
right time to her parents (this
might prove costly as I'm sure her
family would react badly to the
news).
I don't know what to do and am
really confused about the whole
thing. I’ve tried talking to her but we
always end up arguing and the issue
is never resolved.
Tom from Leeds.
Grade B

able to explain
why interfaith

and challenges of

Grade A-A*

able to
evaluate
whether multifaith societies
are better for
