INDUSTRY GROUP • • • Under UIC leadership a modern Railway Mobile System was specified during the 90’s – GSM-R – replacing analogue technology… …and has been refined over the years since then It includes all required voice and data features for Railway Operation • • • GSM-R is Interoperable and Multivendor GSM-R has a very large footprint – in Europe and internationally GSM-R is a true success story! 3 ‹#› GSM-R Renewals and Improvements INDUSTRY GROUP Ongoing in existing Networks/Systems • • • • • • Shift to Internet Protocol IP Introduction of Release 4 GSM-R Core, GPRS footprint Geographical Redundancy for Improved Core Availability Renewal of RAN Mitigation of Radio Interferences Upgrades to ETCS L2/3 bearer capability In Advanced Stage of Standardization • • ER-GSM - Capacity Increase Option ETCS over Packet Switching (GPRS/EDGE) 4 ‹#› Release 4 Core INDUSTRY GROUP Upcoming GSM-R Core Network is the evolution of legacy TDM* based Core to Packet Based Core – from Release 99 to Release 4 The Bearer Independent Core Network architecture is defined by 3GPP* * in Release 4 specifications and since years widely deployed in public mobile networks around the world serving millions of subscribers Physical Separation of the control and signaling telecom layer - MSC Server from the bearer plane - Media Gateway Release 4 is fully compliant with UIC EIRENE specifications and ERA GSM-R baselines Release 4 is a major milestone towards Internet Protocol IP TDM* - Time Division Multiplexing, 3GPP** - 3rd Generation Partnership Project 5 ‹#› GPRS deployments INDUSTRY GROUP Austria Belgium Bulgaria Czech Republic Denmark Greece Hungary Ireland Italy Lithuania Netherlands Norway Portugal Slovakia Slovenia Sweden Switzerland United Kingdom Live In deployment www.gsm-rail.com 6 ‹#› Geographical Redundancy INDUSTRY GROUP Two geographically distant GSM-R Core & Central Dispatcher Nodes to protect against Disasters GSM-R Dispatcher Node GSM-R Core on Location A GSM-R Dispatcher Node GSM-R Core on Location B www.gsm-rail.com 7 ‹#› Renewal of GSM-R Radio Access Network RAN INDUSTRY GROUP • • • • First GSM-R systems were deployed starting 1998 Since then radio technology has improved significantly Less power consumption, less footprint, improved functionality, better maintainability,... A mandatory and sufficiently thorough test spec will guarantee a certain GSM-R quality all over Europe 2. Efforts for verification of compliance with TSI requirements predictable 3. Commonly agreed test specs imperative for European Cross-acceptance also allowing for ”reusage” of e.g. generic ISV • • All these contributing to better efficiency and lower costs for both Railways and Suppliers GSM-R IG is strongly in favour of including the Test Specs in the CCS TSI 13 ‹#› New Professional Radio Standardization in 3GPP INDUSTRY GROUP Critical Communications (ref GSM-R Group Call functionality) currently in 3GPP work planned for inclusion in Release 12 • • • Group Call System Enablers over LTE (GCSE_LTE) ProSe Mission Critical PTT over LTE (MCPTToLTE) • This standardization is driven by Users and Suppliers of Public and Professional Mobile Radio aiming at one Common, Efficient, Fully Featured and User Friendly solution… …aiming at many Users - potentially entire Public Safety Sector … • • Interesting to follow progress with regards to a Next Generation system following after GSM-R 14 ‹#› INDUSTRY GROUP the Future of Rail Communication – a Joint Enterprise Thank you! www.gsm-rail.com 15 ‹#›
