LQ: How do we tackle the character question?
The starting point is the QUESTION:
(a) From the extract, what do you discover about the
character of Utterson?
Use evidence from the extract to support your
answer.

Underline the KEYWORDS. What are we
being asked to do here?

• Carefully read the extract
• As you’re reading, UNDERLINE anything that
shows or tells you something about what
Utterson is like as a character
• Make annotations if you can as you underline
about what you LEARN about Utterson’s
character from the relevant language in the
extract
LQ: How do we tackle the character question?
Tips:
• aim to write around 5 PEE points/paragraphs in
your answer
• PEE means:
P = you make a point/say WHAT you discover
E = Give the evidence/quote to prove what you
discover
E = Explain HOW what you discover is
shown/suggested in the quote
Swap books and peer mark according to the
mark schemes on the next slides!
Remember, to get a ‘C’, you need at least FOUR
PEE paragraphs on Utterson.
LQ: How do we tackle the character question?
• Utterson is straightforward/confident – ‘what I heard was
abominable’
• He is upset/disturbed by Hyde’s involvement with Jekyll
• Utterson is caring/sympathetic towards Jekyll - ‘I am a man to be
trusted’
• Utterson is trustworthy and can keep secrets/not a gossip
• Utterson can’t believe that Jekyll’s problem could be as bad as it
is – ‘I make no doubt I can get you out of it’
• Utterson is confident in HIS ability to SOLVE the problem
• Utterson is reflective and takes his time to make decisions –
‘Utterson reflected a little’
• Utterson does not completely believe/trust Jekyll’s statements
about having control over the situation with Hyde
