How to support your child with reading

Reading in Reception

• All children are beginning the process of learning to read

• Learning to read in Reception means access to other subjects;

• Maths

• Science

• History & Geography

• Languages

Lots of research suggests that the best way to support your child is:

• Talking to them as much as possible.

• Teach Nursery Rhymes

• Reading Fairytales

• Singing songs

• Sharing books together.

ACTIVITY:

Phonics!

• Research shows that phonics is the best and fastest way to teach reading and writing.

Practise saying the sounds together.

Blending

• We teach children the sounds and they use these to read the words.

• We sometimes use sound buttons to do this.

• Let ’ s practise a few together.

Segmenting

• We teach children to segment the sounds to write words.

• We use phoneme frames to support, children write 1 sound on each line.

• Let ’ s practise some together.

Home Readers

• Thank you for your comments in your children’s reading records. They are very helpful to us.

• Please continue to do so.

Guided Reading in Reception

• The children are taking part in guided reading session each week in small groups.

• They read a variety of books during the guided reading session.

Reading Tips (before you read)

• Look at the cover. What do you think the story will be about?

• Run through the book using the language of the book.

• Talk about reading strategies.
