What is it?
• Fully secure email, calendar, directory,
SMS and Fax service
• Based on Microsoft Exchange2007 it is
available inside and outside the NHS, free
of charge to users
• 24x7x365, with full help desk and DR
coverage
Current status
• Over 516,000 registered accounts
• 13,000 new accounts registered each
month
• 2.2 million emails across the platform
daily
• 1.3 million SMS messages per month
• 20 Trusts on migration plan between now
and July – more in early engagement
Why NHSmail?
• Typical trust email service costs £5.84 per
user month. NHSmail costs £1.90 – for a
better service (security, DR, SLAs etc)
• Cash releasing benefit > £400m. Cost
avoidance benefits at a similar level
Extending the boundary
• The NHS has many workflows which
cross the organisational boundary
• Pharmacists, ISTCs, Dentists,
Optometrists …
• Projects are in place to manage the
process of extending NHSmail across the
NHS boundary

community!
